As the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Substitute if you must but Alton knows best!

Used Chef Anne's Garlic Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes over the top...un-freakin'-believable meal...EPIC!!!! Easily the best meal I've made this year....

With 197 other reviewers stating this recipe is amazing, is it really necessary I follow it up with one more? Sure, why not. This was a fantastic shepherd's pie!!! Delish, delish delish.

I made one substitution, I put half a cup of chicken broth and half a cup of a dark ale, instead of one cup chicken broth.

    Worth the energy and time!!

I love this recipe. My boyfriend had seconds and I thought it was excellent. I, however, used ground beef and boyfriend requested a stringy meat for next time and I also used French fingerling potatoes and put them in a food processor then used a piping bag for the top of the mixture. Great presentation and the special potatoes gave it a melty/gooey texture. Yum!

It was too salty for our tastes. I decided I'd follow the recipe to a 'T' this time, and added the entire tsp of Kosher salt. I'd make it again, but I'd cut way back on the salt, and add more broth to make it a bit more 'soupy'.

    Really Good!
I made a shepherd's pie a few months ago from another Food Network recipe but I used ground beef instead of the lamb. It was just OK. Many reviews said that if you are going to make a shepherd's pie you have to use lamb and after making Altons, I absolutely agree! This dish is soooooo much better with lamb! I followed the recipe exactly and really enjoyed it.

Great recipe, did make a few adjustments tho. I used beef instead of lamb, and made my own chicken broth. It was phenomenal. My 12 year old brother, who is a very picky eater and never finishes his plate, ate 3 servings

Very good and tasty. I was a little short on the mashed potatoes so make sure you have enough to cover the edges first as the recipe states and then work your way in the middle. It wasn't pretty when it came out but thankfully it tasted good. Will make again!

I used ground beef instead of lamb and it was very good. Also, would add more chicken broth and flour to make more sauce for the meat and vegetables.
