Ok, so I didn't follow the recipe. I saw the show LOVE Alton!! I had sardines in tomato sauce, some store bought guacamole and some salsa. I was thinking bruschetta with fish. I mashed it together broiled it and my dad and I had a feast. My mother who kept saying I don't eat sardines also enjoyed it. A nice appetizer with a glass of wine. Just a great way to eat sardines and so healthy. Go omega 3's!

Eh... seemed like each ingredient ruined the other. Creamy, crunchy, and fishy do not go well. Really surprised that this received such positive reviews. I suspect that people where just surprised they could eat sardines.... think about it, very few recipes have sardines. I can name 12 that use anchovies but none that use sardines. Do a search on this site or bon app., then search anchovies. Even go to Chicken of The Sea's website; they sell sardines and only have 2 recipes for them. These little fish are worthless. This leads to my next point. Alton usually makes classic food that people no longer prepare at home; this was just a dietitian's ridiculous concoction, a mishmash of purportedly healthy ingredients for their health and not their flavor. More trouble than it's worth. I'll just stick to sardines with strong cheese and crackers, but honestly, they are so utterly useless I may never use them again. And that'll be just fine.

This is fabulous. Even when my first attempt (from memory the day after seeing this episode strayed (drizzled the vinagrette instead of marinating, didn't oil the bread it was fantastic. And even with CHEAP (>$1 sardines, it was pretty darned good! Now a "stay at home date night" favorite!

WOW. I did not think I liked sardines. Was I wrong. The avocado really mellows this out. Made exactly as written, just squeezed lemon over the final product. Used regular toaster for the toast. Will make over and over.

I've made a salad adaptation of this, dicing the avocaod and tossing it in the dressing with the sardines. I also add a minced jalapeno and 3 sliced scallions, and I don't wait the hour either - it's so dang tasty, I eat it straight from the bowl with the mixing spoon. Oh, it's just too bad that no one else in the family likes sardines, bwahahahahahaha!

Excellent, I was very pleasantly surprised by this dish! I admit I simplified it a little, not wanting to wait an hour, and only making it for two people... I whisked up the dressing [substituted white wine vinegar for sherry vinegar as I didn't have any on hand] and set it aside. I only had one can of sardines, so I didn't have any reserved sardine oil to brush on the bread. So instead I toasted the bread in the toaster, then drizzled it with a little of the dressing, then topped it with the smashed avocado and sardines. Sprinkled a little sea salt on top, then finished the whole thing off with another drizzle of dressing. Simply wonderful! The "fish" flavor reminded me of a good tuna sandwich - not really fishy, but it didn't taste like nothing either. Will definitely be making this again!

Not nearly as fishy as i thought it would be. The flavor was excellent. I'm really glad i tried it and would recommend others try it too.

Loved the recipe... but we thought we would bump it up and make it on baked russets instead of sourdough...

This was my very first sardine adventure. I'm so glad I tried it. I ended up making it three more times that week and ate it for dinner. I've also made it without the avocado and used triscuts and it worked for a quick and easy snack.

I saw the episode, read the reviews, went to the store. I did the prep for the "marinade" and saved the fishies for last. I soiled my pants a little when I opened the can. WHY didn't ANYONE WARN ME?!

After coming down from my near cardiac arrest, I proceeded to smash the fishies in the marinade with reckless abandon. After the beating, I did the one thing I don't think you’re supposed to do: Bend over and sniff it. Yeah, I never said I was bright! So I doused it in more lemon juice. I ran out of lemon juice, so I opened a bottle of lime juice and continued the Brisling massacre.

After putting the sour dough in, I was squinting at "the 'dines" with judging eyes as they helplessly laid there... drowning in the sea of lemon/lime. Taking bread, I laid the avocados, and scooped "the 'dines" on top and ADDED MORE LIME!

Pros: It was fun, easy to make, decently flavored.
Cons: I bit down on my inner lip on the first bite, bled, and the lemon/lime got their sweet revenge.
