Like all other comments, I was hesitant to try sardines but Alton makes eating styrofoam look good so I thought I'd try it after watching the show and knowing that it helped him lose weight. I liked it a lot and it was easy to make! I had to sub red wine vinegar b/c I accidentally bought sherry wine instead. First piece was definitely delicious, but the the fishy smell/taste came back to me half way through the 2nd piece. Hence the 4 stars. So I may try regular olive oil instead of the oil straight out of the can. The oil and lemon juice make the 2nd piece a little soggy in the middle, so I suggest assembling the second piece after you've eaten the first piece in order to keep the toast crunchy. Lastly, I used cilantro in place of parsley and loved it more!

I had my doubts... But this is amazingly addictive. If you are like me and cooking for only one (my wife could not stand the idea of sardines, it may be easier to buy the single-serving pre-squashed avocado packets that some stores carry. I've also tried this as a wrap inside of multigrain tortillas - wonderful!

Tasty, indeed! I'm so glad I saw the video of this recipe. I'm into sardines lately and would consider any recipes using sardines. Now, back to this recipe. Alton Brown says the avocado is used to tame down the taste of the sardines and it sure does so. The sandwich tastes smoky, but not fishy by any means. The vinaigrette is actually a little sweet, which was quite a pleasant surprise. I didn't have sherry vinegar, used apple cider vinegar instead. Great and quick dinner for me. And it looks so pretty as a sandwich... Wish I had some more :

Wonderful! We eat it at least twice a week as a snack or a quick lunch.

This is a great meal but I have to ask, how many meals is this? I know I can't eat 4 slices at one sitting.

LOVED IT!! My 3 sons do not like sardines - but love this recipe! Have made it many times and can't believe sardines or 'brislings' taste so good. Do spend the extra to get the brislings - they are milder.

I had never eaten a sardine in my whole life when I made this - was apprehensive, but needed more heart-healthy food. LOVED it! I mush up the sardines to make it more appealing. Tasted great and great for you.

I was inspired to try this, because I figure if anyone can make me try/enjoy sardines, it would be Alton. To me, this tasted like a tuna sandwich. I just don't like tuna very much. All in all, I would say that this is a pretty good recipe, just not one for me. The dressing was delicious, and all in all, it's a very pleasant flavor.

I have read where everyone has said the sardines are a little hard to eat; I agree. However, tThere is a brand of sardines called Crown & Prince which are skinless and boneless that are really good. The sardines come packed in olive oil. I cannot just eat any sardine but these taste better than tuna.
