I have been eating oatmeal for years however using the Quaker oats. I heard how good this steel cut oatmeal was for you so I thought I would try it.

Just delicious. Completely different from the norm, but very satisfying and flavorful. I added a little more milk and about 1/4 cup of heavy cream. I didn't have buttermilk on hand this time. I also added dried cranberries and raisins. After this was finished I served it with just a touch of chopped walnuts.

I love steel cut oats, I've been eating them every morning for over a year now. When I saw this recipe on "Good Eats" I was excited. I loved all the information, but frankly all the recipes I tried didn't woork for me. I guess I'm a purist, but I thought the toasting before cooking would be good, but I didn't like the flavor.
I just boil 4 cups of water before I go to bed, pour in 1 C of SC oats, cover tightly, remove from the heat and let them soak overnight. In the morning I put them in individual serving tupperware and I have breakfast for a week. I just mix it up with different fruit (bluberries are my favorite and I always add a few nuts for protein. I Microwave it before I eat it to cook, about 3 min. Very good that way. Oh, and I buy my oats by the pound at Wild Oats. The store bought (packaged ones aren't nearly as good. I'll stick the good old Irish way!

Great recipe. We use it with oat groats and steel cut them in a blender. We also use raw milk that's turning into buttermilk or just raw milk and this is fantastic. I usually soak crasins in a little boiling water to soften them up before I add to the oatmeal. Then the kids add some cinnamon and a few chocolate chips.

.... but don't forget the salt. The recipie doesn't mention it, but in the Good Eats episode he adds about a half teaspoon when he adds the milk/buttermilk liquids.

This was some pretty good oatmeal but I like oatmeal to begin with. I am not quiet sure what went wrong but mine didn't look like what he ate on the show and it took longer than the 35 mins to make. I do plan on perfecting this though and once I do I have no intention of ever letting my family eat that pre-packaged stuff again. What more could you ask for in an oatmeal? Home-made, hearty, and very healthy!

My kids have forgotten that oatmeal comes any other way! I add cinnamon, grated nutmeg, & a dash of ground cloves. The real secret ingredient is 1 tsp of vanilla extract stirred in just before serving. The more you make this taste like an oatmeal cookie, the more they'll eat. Just make it the night before & reheat in the morning if you're wanting a hot stick-to-your-ribs breakfast on a cold morning.

This oatmeal is great. It has a nutty flavor, that I don't think you'll get w/traditional oatmeal that's boiled.

I think that I shall never see oatmeal as wonderful as thee! I am now addicted to this breakfast and eat it almost every day! So many ways to serve this: with raisins and/or other dried fruit, apples, bananas, brown sugar, nuts, or even Equal sweetner works well. I found I prefer whole milk or half-n-half instead of the buttermilk. I've given this recipe to everyone I know!
