Breakfast will never be the same at our house. Sense the crock-pot was turned into the Breakfast pot we make it twice a week. Steel cut or Pin Head oats work much better that scotch oats. Play with your dried fruit choices. I like cherrys or cranberries with apricots!!

I have to admit that I'm hooked. I like to have oatmeal in the morning anyway, but this relatively simple recipe is definitely a step up over the average cardboard-tasting mush. I love the toasty flavor and the ever-so-slight tang from the buttermilk. It's one that I'll make over and over again.

The buttermilk made this wonderful and creamy tasting. Adjust the brown sugar for sweetness to your liking. My favorite oatmeal recipe.

You must try this. The toastingof the oats brings out this outstanding nutty flavor that engulfs to whole house with its aroma.

I followed the recipe to the T but it didn't turn out well because the oats were still not fully cooked and the flavor did not seep in the oats. Next time, I would recommend either heating it with higher heat or for a longer amount of time. I will try this recipe again but next time try to cook it longer. Hope to update my review with a longer cooking time

The addition of buttermilk to an otherwise fairly traditional irish oats recipe really takes this from simple comfort food to an amazing breakfast surprise.

Although Alton Brown's recipe for steel cut oatmeal takes a little while to prepare, it is extremely easy to make and even more delicious. It has become such a favorite that we pretty much always keep buttermilk on hand specially for when we are in the mood! The smell of the oats when they are toasting is an irresistible invitation to get out of bed on a frosty morning.

While I've enjoyed nearly every Alton Brown recipe I've tried, this one fell a little short. I guess I prefer the more simple taste of plain oatmeal. But if you need it fancy, just add bits of dried fruit while you cook any oatmeal, and then sprinkle it with brown sugar in your bowl. Quick, simple, delicious!
