This recipe is a keeper. Great texture and flavor. This is the old-fashioned butter-sugar cookie that our parents made in the 40's and 50's. I rolled mine out between two sheets of parchment paper dusted with powdered sugar, which makes it a little easier to manipulate. When the bottom of the dough started sticking, all I had to do was lift the entire paper onto a frozen cookie sheet, and it came right off. A teaspoon of either vanilla or almond flavoring gave the cookie a hint of richness.

This Is the second year I have made these to go in my holiday candy baskets and I started getting requests for these cookies at thanksgiving. Everyone I gifted them to told me they were the best sugar cookies they have ever had. I made a powdered sugar and vanilla icing to go on them. Very simple just a cup of powdered sugar three tablespoons water and half teaspoon vanilla. Add powdered sugar or water to get the thickness you desire. Love, love, love these cookies. DELICIOUS!

I have never been able to roll and cut cookies. I watched Alton make these on his show and I said I am going to try one more time. They turned out wonderful. They were easy to roll out. They kept their shape and they tasted soooooooo good!!!!! I can now say I can make cut out sugar cookies.

Cookies taste great. I did add 1 1/2 teaspoon of almond to the mix as I love that flavor in my sugar cookies. The dough was perfect as I followed his recipe exactly. Will defintely use again.

I made these a couple of years and just felt "meh" about them, but I decided to try again this year & made them for Christmas gifts. I followed the recipe to the letter & they were wonderful! Light, buttery, & not too sweet. I frosted them with the FN's easy vanilla buttercream frosting recipe (I think it's Gale Gand's recipe. They even tasted better the second day. Thanks once again, Alton. This recipe is a keeper! I may even make more tonight.

What nightmare!! Followed recipe to the T and dough was a crumbly mess. Figured maybe the chilling process is what pulls it together, NOPE. Added 1 more egg, 1 tsp vanilla and 2 more tbsp milk to get it to finally resemble dough.
