I've made these cookies the last five Christmases and my family loves them. They are pretty easy and quick to make and easy to roll out. I usually make them the dough the night before, refrigerate them overnight, and roll the cookies out and bake in the morning. They come out perfectly every time I've made them. I love the idea of rolling them with powdered sugar, as I have found rolling with flour changes the consistency and taste of the dough sometimes. The only change I make is I add 1 tsp. of vanilla extract but they taste good without them as well. I decorate them with sugar sprinkles and/or a simple powdered sugar icing. You cant go wrong with this recipe!

Everyone in my family loves these cookies! I've been making them for several years and I use the recipe as-is. I'm not sure why some people are having problems. When I started making these I was a novice baker and I had no trouble at all. One year I got started too late and was too tired to decorate them and nobody cared! These cookies are just that tasty.

Finally I have found a sugar cutout cookie recipe. Every year at Christmas it seems I try a new cookie recipe. Every year I have struggled with crumbly or sticky dough. This recipe was easy and delicious. They baked up beautifully and everyone loved them. Thanks Alton!

So far disappointed in this recipe. The dough is very dry and crumbly! I will take others' advice and add more milk and little bit more vanilla. I adore Alton; but this recipe will probably not be receive a repeat try. These were to be Santa cookies...... :'''(

Best sugar cookies ever. They are not dry and bready neither. They don't need frosting either.

I made these for my best friend the other day, and she said later they were the best homemade cookies she's ever had in her life. That made my day! I added some decorative sprinkles before putting them in the oven, and took them out at the 7 minute mark since I like my cookies a bit softer. I didn't add vanilla like others did since I figured the sugar sprinkles would add enough extra flavor. I plan to make more later tonight and turn them into sandwich cookies with buttercream frosting in between. :

I made this recipe to a T and they came out terrible! I attended culinary school, and I know how to bake fairly well. This recipe was a disaster. I could tell as soon as I tried to shape the cookies they had the wrong consistency. I went ahead and baked some off anyway, and after about 10-12 minutes I took out the cookies, which had not changed color at all, and tasted them. I had to immediately spit it out, all I could taste was flour. All of my ingredients were fresh, and I made the cookies exactly as the recipe stated. I am very disappointed, after all, I am a huge Alton Brown fan! Sorry Alton, but this recipe is for the dogs! Literally. That's the only way I could get rid of these cookies without straight throwing them in the garbage.

The cookies turned out really good after adding the vanilla to the recipe. I didn't have any colored sugar so I topped with a little bit of light brown sugar and added a piece of red hots in the middle for color and a little different taste as well as texture. People really liked them as did I. I would like to try the buttercream frosting on them next time too.

Been making sugar cookies during the holidays since I was a little kid and since being on my own the past few years this recipe has become my go-to! Like others I add a little vanilla but other than that I follow the directions to a T. I go back & forth with rolling them out and cutting them into festive shapes or rolling into a log and just freezing and slicing them.
I frost them with homemade buttercream frosting and green/red sugar and they are always a hit!
