I made this recently for my daughter in law's baby shower, which was co-ed. It was a huge hit! One older couple said they were the best Swedish meatballs they ever had. Others told me they were better than Ikea's. They're a lot of work, but oh so good!

This was my first attempt at making Swedish Meatballs and it was awesome! My husband enjoys my cooking but never complimented my meatballs the way he did after trying these. I did use an entire pound of beef and entire pound of pork and instead of using bread and milk I used two cups of bread crumbs. Other than this change, I did not change any other thing. I see a lot of comments mention the sauce was not that good because it was bland. I totally disagree with that. I loved it! Thank you so much, Alton! I finally have a meatball recipe that will actually stay in the recipe box!

Meatballs themselves tasted great, although they took quite a bit longer to properly brown on my electric skillet than stated in the recipe. I made and reduced the sauce (substituting sour cream for heavy cream, and found it too bland. I'm no connoisseur of Swedish meatballs, however, so perhaps this is how the sauce is supposed to taste. Regardless, I didn't like it, so I added salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, and Worcestershire sauce, which helped a bit.

I made this recipe exactly as it's presented--no substitutions--and it was excellent. The only tweak was, while cooking my egg noodles (as a side I had the meatballs in the sauce in the oven at about 275. I think the added time soaking in the gravy made it even better. Can't wait to make it again!

These are spectacular! My Swedish guests raved that they were the best they ever had. Served with egg noodles and some lingonberry preserves. Quadrupled the recipe to make enough for 40 adults, used home-baked bread with the crust off. Just amazing.

I made this for Christmas dinner and everyone loved it. I made extra gravy and poured it over noodles. I added nutmeg and allspice to the gravy, which gave it a nice flavor. The meatballs were a little tough and could have used more milk and/or water added. Overall, very delicious and pretty quick and easy dish to prepare.

I have made this recipe vegetarian and lower in fat. I used 2 packages thawed plain veggie burgers. I sauteed the onion in 1 tablespoon butter till golden, about 15 minutes, and added about 5 minced garlic cloves and sauteed another 2 minutes. I mixed the onion and garlic with the thawed and crumbled veggie burgers, the bread and (1% milk mixture, 1 egg plus 1/4 cup egg whites, 1/4 cup shredded parm cheese, and the kosher salt, black pepper, nutmeg and allspice as called for in the recipe. I threw it all in the stand mixer for about 5 minutes on the second speed, stopping the cycle and scraping down the bowl several times. I put the mixture in the fridge for about 30 minutes to set, then shaped into balls and fried them in batches, 1 tbsp butter melted in a time, about 10 minutes per batch; I let them sit undisturbed for about 4 minutes, then started turning them every 2 minutes after till the 4 sides were browned.

Awesome recipe! Just make sure to tear the bread into small enough pieces so you don't get bread chunks in your meatballs. Also, I like to add a bit of seasoning along with soy sauce to the sauce. The soy sauce adds a lot of flavor, just don't overdo it.

And personally I like to heat up some "fast food" type fries to eat with this instead of mashed or whole potatoes like most swedish recipes. Make sure to find some lingonberry jam as it goes perfect with the meatballs and even great with the fries!

I made these for my boyfriend, our roommate and our roommate's brother who are all the pickiest eaters i have ever met. Only my roommate eats vegetables and only certain ones at that. I figured with these i could hide some veggies they all love to hate and boy were they gone quickly after i cooked them!!! This is one recipe I am definitely keeping in my recipe tin here at home. it is amazing.
