After about 25 minutes, I still did not have this wonderful smell wafting through the kitchen and a quick taste revealed that the beans were already tender but just sort of bland and the ingredients seemingly were not coming together. I had used nitrate free uncured bacon and organic chicken broth and maybe that was the issue? So, I had to resort to adding [more] salt, tasting, adding salt again, and, in the end, probably more of it than I would have liked to add -- but, that did the trick and finally, the recipe came together. Yes, it was good (we were eating this side dish and finished it without having touched our main course. I also like this recipe because it's easy.

Delicious. I grew up in the South as well, and never liked fresh green beans until now. My entire family is the same, and they all loved this dish. I made the recipe just as written, except switched out the mushrooms for onions instead. Next time I might leave out a little of the bacon. Otherwise, perfect.

this is exactly how my grandma and mom made their green beans and I have always loved them. I was never able to replicate the technique, even after asking for the receipe. I like the idea of using small cubed potatoes instead of mushrooms as somebody mentioned here.

More than tasty but that's what I've learned to expect from Anne's recipes.

This is how string bean should be made. This is a old southern dish she just added mushrooms. What I did was put some red skin potatos in a little vingear and added some more seasoning and it was sooo good.

I got a chuckle after seeing this recipe because this is an old school or southern dish that my grandmother and mother make. The only difference is the addition of mushrooms and they both use black pepper and an onion. So I made the Anne's way with an onion and my trusty black pepper. I can't cook without it because I love it, but I still added a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little kick. The onion just gives it just a little more flavor to me. This dish rocks!
