ok, so a few adjustments; i made the broth with the veggies, garlic, peppercorns, bay, (some thyme, and sea salt. strained, and started soup with fresh veggies. used celery, carrots and parsnips. added the shredded chicken from making the broth, 1/2 a lemon and juice, and just a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg. it was just enough that you could taste something, but not enough to overpower. it was AMAZING. truly the richest best broth i've ever eaten! still had that warm homey taste, not too adventurous, but different enough. best chicken soup i've ever eaten!!

My father-in-law feels he is a soup specialist, having been a travelling salesman and eaten it all over the East Coast. I made this exact recipe for him as a first-time try a few months ago, and he deemed it the best chicken noodle soup he had ever had in his life. And he really tells the truth -- he actually tells me if things aren't good (a little too truthful!. Since then it's been a huge hit with my husband and 8 year old twins as well!

Husband and I loved this soup. I've been reworking our diet, putting in a vegetarian night and a soup night every week. Stormy weather today made this soup a natural. Husband came home from work and inhaled four bowls and raved about how good it was. Cinnamon, I told him, and nutmeg and lemon. This is going to be a definite make-again, make-often for us. Delicious!

My whole family loved this soup. My husband and my two tweeners couldn't get enough. It is hard to please all of them at the same time. I prepared it just like the recipe stated. I was skeptical of the lemon (one of the secret ingredient weapons but I am a good follower so I obeyed the directions as written and I am so glad I did. The soup was a huge huge hit and felt like I truly have one special recipe for years to come. I feel like this is one of those "family" recipes that one would keep under lock and key. Thank you Anne for sharing this with all of us.

One word. Wow! This is the best chicken noodle soup I've ever tasted and after eating it, I can't believe that I actually made it! What a difference the fresh thyme and lemon made! I was nervous when I first added the lemon and cinnamon because it smelled so lemony, but when the flavors came together, it was perfect. I don't know if it was improper seasoning on my part or just personal taste but I added 1 crushed chicken bullion cube as a last ingrediant which really pulled it together for me. I will be making this again! Sure to be a hit!

Made this for dinner last night. Even though I gave this recipe a 4/5, I'm not sure if the soup would have turned out as good as others claim if I hadn't added a tomato. I tasted the soup half way through the cooking process (to adjust seasoning and found the soup to taste like boiled water with lemon. So I chucked in a tomato. The soup eventually thickened a little and tasted good in the end.

If I could, I would give this 10 stars! What an awesome recipe for chicken soup. I couldn't tell my mom that this was better than hers and I have always thought she is the queen of chicken soup. The seasonings really work. I did cut down on the amount of lemon and it was wonderful. I was skeptical of the cinnamon, but what a warm and comforting taste. I really think if you thought it was too spicy hot or inedible, you did something wrong. I have made this twice a month and I freeze some so I can have it periodically. Anne, you are one of my favorites. Your recipes are awesome and I love your personality. I have have my own "thank you for coming bowl"!

This was my first attempt at making soup and normally I am not a soup person..IT WAS FANTASTIC!! Of course I tweeked it,a recipe is a "GUIDE" not written in stone. With all due respect to the negative comments, to those folks you must have done something wrong! It was so simple, and you always check for seasonings as you cook. If your family doesn't like spicy leave out the pepper flakes and use a milder seasoning. if the recipe calls for a large amount of something you are not crazy about the food police will not carry you kicking and screaming from your home in the middle of the night! LOL! I loved the flavors of the lemon and cinamon..My hubby didnt' bring home the canned beans that I need he brought home the beans that you have to actually COOK..If you screw it up the first time...TRY IT AGAIN... make it your own..IT'S FUN!! Cooking is a learning experience!
    HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!
