I tried this recipe for the first time and it was delicious. Anne's recipe is simple, straightforward, rich and even heats up well the next few days... I loved it.
I did make a modification to this dish, and that was to substitute the lamb chunks for half ground lamb and half ground beef, and the results were still excellent. I will say though, that I will probably use just ground beef next time, as my family wasn't crazy about the gaminess of the lamb. This recipe is definitely a keeper!!

Great recipe! I've had Shepards Pie many times but this has to be the best version I've ever had or made. I did two things different. I didn't have fresh thyme so I substituted a small branch of rosemary. I also used my microplane to grate a light dusting of parmesan cheese over the top before baking.

We just ate this. I'm speechless. It was THAT good. Just follow the directions, and you'll be fine. Anne, I had beautiful brown crud on the bottom of my pot after browning the lamb, sweating the veggies, and cooking down the tomato paste. Ummm. Brown food rocks, and this meal is 100 percent satisfying and delicious. Big thumbs up from my teenage son, husband and myself.

Terrt.valle: A nice side note. I appreciate it if some folks offer comments on substitions. Besides not being able to afford lamb...I abhor it, but love shepherd's pie. It was nice to see beef & pork are sucessful substitutes for lamb. As well as other subs.
I do figure when you substitute 90% of the ingredients, it radically changes the entire recipe. But one or two subs, based on what's on hand or whatever...adds to my experience of cooking.
In any event, because this recipe sounds so yummy...& I can sub beef or pork...I will be making this shortly.

Saw the show and had to make this recipe. My husband loves both lamb and Shepherd's Pie.
Anne is awesome, I love her show and her recipes, this one was fabulous! The smell in the house leading up to dinner drove my 4 year old CRAZY! I have to disagree with terry.valle I love hearing what others have done. Release your inner cook and be creative!

This was a great recipe. I did add green beans because the looked beautiful when I went to the farmer's market and I used beef since the men in my life are anti-lamb. The gravy was rich and we had more than enough left over for lunch for both myself and my husband even after feeding my teenager.

What a wonderful dish. I am not that fond of Lamb because of the gamey taste however I did soak the cut lamb for a little more than two hours in milk to help pull out the gamey flavor. Followed the recipe and it turned out wonderful. will make again.
as a side note, please refrain from posting a review if you changed Anne's recipe or made it using different ingredients like the meat, what you have made is not the same thing. Some use this forum to determine if it is something that they will like. Thanks, great dish Anne

Thank you Anne! I have tried several shepherd's pie recipes in my time but last night this became the hands down family favorite. I used ground lamb just because my husband preferred it and used a little less liquid and made sure it really got thick. Absolutely fantastic and thanks so much.

This recipe came out really good, except it was too salty. I also think the red wine didn't do much for it, it actually make it taste weird for me.
If I were to make it again, I would use my own home made sodium free chicken stock and I'd omit red wine. Otherwise, this recipe works really well and I loved how the mash potatoes crisped up. This feature added tons of flavor to the recipe.
