I made these for about 150 football players from our local highschool and they all loved them. It could have been the beer in them. I did not have the bbq sauce mentioned so I used KC Masterpiece.

Fantastic recipe. I left out the black beans and we used hot dogs and burgers in stead of ribs. Ole Ed makes excellent ribs but I cant handle that much smoke these days, besides I like a god rub and long slow cooking. I thought bobby won but I wouldnt say that in Raleigh, NC

Made these beans for 4th of July and just loved them! Love the combination of three types of beans instead of just your usual pintos - just great flavors all the way around. This will be my go to recipe for Baked Beans from now on. There's a typo in the recipe which repeats the word "beans" twice when adding the ingredients after the dry mustard. The last word should be "beer" and that's when you would add the bottle of beer. Buy a nice hearty dark beer for more flavor. I served them straight from the stove the first time we had them but then baked the leftovers the next night and they were even better. Just fantastic! I highly recommend that you try these beans.

You simply add the beer in the same time as the other liquid ingredients -- with the molasses, etc. Also, Ed added a secret ingredient which I believe to be a small shot of Tequila, but it could have been "moonshine".

As for "Ed's BBQ Sauce" - just use any quality tomato based KC style sauce with a bit of a kick.

Recipe looks delicious and was clearlly a favorite on the show. However, the recipe does not show when to add the bottle of beer. Just drink it?
