I read the reviews before trying this recipe and decided to make this with oranges. I used canned mandarin oranges, bc that is what I had on hand. My attempt at making meringue failed. I used brown sugar and extract but no sugar in the fruit mixture. I added ice cream and used about three tablespoons of whatever froth I was able to get from my "meringue mixture". I bake the combo, and it was tasty. Next time I will just make the fruit mixture and serve it over some cold ice cream.

i thought it was disqusting! i was so excited to try it. she said it wouldnt be as bitter but i thought it was worse! i dont think ill try any more recipes from her...eww

I thought the presentation was great. I suggest that the membrains be removed and the grapefruit be cut into small bite size pieces. I found the grapefruit, cut into segments, a little difficult to eat .
I liked Theresa's suggedtion using baked apples, I will try this idea soon.

I went out and bought the recipes after I saw the show. I then served it as dessert to some family and everyone thought it was good! You have to really appreciate the blend of the grapefruit and meringue to like the dish. Although the bottom doesn't look ALL that appetizing, the taste definitely makes up for it. I thought this was an excellent, not to expensive, appetizing, quick and easy recipe. I absolutely loved it. Also if you're worried about how hot grapefruits would taste, you don't have to worry about it because the ice cream cools everything down, making the dish able to eat straight out of the oven! If you're not too hot on grapefruit, this dish isn't for you.

If you want t try a really good baked grapefruit, actually its broiled, not baked, try cutting grapefruit in half, sprinkle with brown sugar and dark rum. Put under broiler for just a couple of minutes, untl sugar is melted and bubbly and Enjoy. Its much easier, faster and delicious..

My daughter and I thought this was a rather interesting recipe and as soon as the show was over we went out and bought what we needed. It was really gross.
- the juice from the grapefruits should have been drained off and not squeezed into the fruit/sugar mixture. It didn't mix well with the cream from the ice cream. OR maybe add an extra step and drain off the juice/sugar/vanilla and bring it up to a quick boil to thicken it to a syrup instead of thin juice may be slightly better.
-vanilla ice cream does not go well with such a bitter fruit eventhough my ruby reds were surprisingly sweet. Maybe that's just a personal preference, but grapefruits are sort of peppery and not just bitter and my daughter and I both thought it to be a bad combo.
-the appearance was real yucky under the merengue and made it that much harder to eat, sort of like vomit. Picture it, grapefruit juice, chunks of grapefruit, melted ice cream... ewww.
-with the cold ice cream under the merengue only the top of the merengue set and left a rather squishy bottom to what would've been the best part of the desert. I would say to make sure to put only a thin layer of merengue on top instead of dollops and to push the ice cream under the grapefruits or even put the ice cream in the ramekin first then the fruit.
The best part of this whole experience was actually agreeing with my daughter on food and having a good laugh about this adorable looking desert (before digging in of course tasting so wickedly bad. We may try using baked apples with brown sugar and cinnamon instead next time.
