This was easy to do but it was so thick that when I spread it, It did not come out pretty.
This had to be one of the worst buttercream recipes I've ever tried. First, you CANNOT use margarine as a butter substitute. It simply does NOT come together the same way. In an attempt to fix this after "Combining all ingredients", I used near 4 pounds of Pow. Sugar and I figured it was a lost cause. I finally went to the store, bought more butter and sugar and started my process over with a new recipe. My second recipe turned out MUCH better and I'll be using that from now on.
    Love it
This recipe is great IF done right. (Which is why I only gave 3 stars please do not add any milk until the very end!! You also need to cream ur butter/vanilla/shortening (if u must use it before adding the dry ingredients. It takes approx 4 cups of powdered sugar to make this. Add one at a time until completely incorporated. Then at the end I recommend adding milk only a tablespoon at a time until u reach ur desired consistency. If ur piping, of course ur going to want it thicker. (I myself use whipping cream it's buttercream so it's going to be sweet! That's the point ; a few more tips- all white icing can also be achieved with clear vanilla extract and/or using white food coloring paste. (Make sure it's paste or u thin ur icing this makes coloring it much easier, but stick to food coloring paste. If shortening is a must, I recommend crisco butter flavor. Try a 1/2, 1/2 shortening/ butter ratio. Happy decorating!!!
WAY too sweet and runny. I didn't read any reviews before I made this, but I adapted and added a huge container of whipped cream cheese and it was fine. Still way too sweet, though.
This icing was FAR too sweet. The texture was great, even though I added less sugar than the recipe called for. I find that a higher butter to sugar ratio produces a much better product. This tasted like straight powdered sugar. I certainly will not make this recipe again.
I agree, very easy to make and very good. My icing usually comes out too runny even if I follow the directions. I decided to check the reviews first and found a helpful hint- add the milk slowly. I will be using this one again for sure!
Very easy to make and very very good! So much better than store bought. I used whole milk and added a 1/4 cup at a time. A hit with my family and friends!
This was a very easy and tasty frosting to make.
how far in advance can I make this?
The easiest recipe in the world! And of course my KitchenAid mixeer made it even easier. Great base, I added crushed Oreo's & wala, Oreo icing!
I made a double batch of this recipe, I followed some review ie. pour milk in slowly and I added some maple syrup at the end which made it have a smoother taste. I would probably make this again It was a hit with kids and adults
    Very good. It's very sweet.
okay, so my sister and i made cupcakes and wanted an easy frosting to make and i am honestly going to say that this icing is HORRIBLE! its runny and all you can taste is the stupid confectioners sugar.

i recommend you don't use this recipe...
I have been searching for a buttercream icing for a long time. My husband is funny about buttercream icing. His mom makes a very good one. but I can't seem to make it like she does. I used this receipe for my granddaughter's birthday cake and it was a BIG hit. I won't use any other buttercream icing. I found what works. You see I'm a baker also for family and friends. I would like to know how to make a chocolate icing using the same recipe. My hat's off to you Colette. I'm going to try your white cake receipe also. Do you have a whipped icing recipe?

I came across this recipe in looking for something close to one I used to have. This is the closest thing to what I had. I changed up the prep since I have made buttercream frosting by adding the sugar after the butter, milk and salt. I have added the Vanilla last but I don't think it makes a difference. Great Recipe! Loved it! :-D
I loved this icing. I added another stick of butter, a little more vanilla, and added the milk a little at a time because it will get to runny if you use all of what the recipe calls for. My friends loved it! So much better than store bought icing. It is very sweet, so if your not a big fan of super sweet this isn't the icing for you.
I love this recipe. My first time ever making a buttercream icing and it came out perfect. Although I did make a minor adjustment, along with the (clear) vanilla extract I added 1 tsp of Maple extract and it gave it a very creamy wonderful taste and got rid of that "too sweet" taste. Although dont use it if you want the buttercream to be pure white. Mine came out an off-white color to it.
This was a very good icing only thing to watch for is how much milk you put in cuz if you use the half cup it comes out runny. I liked it.
This icing is easy & yummy! :)
I've been taking cake decorating classes and have learned a trick for making icing taste not so sweet.....add 1/4 tsp of almond extract. Happy icing!
Great flavor, but too sweet. Next time I will reduce the sugar.
I USED THIS RECIPE BUT ADDED AN EXTRA CUP OF BUTTER. I ALSO ADDED SOME MAPLE EXTRACT FLAVORING. I USED IT ON AN ANGEL FOOD CAKE. EVERYONE JUST RAVED ABOUT IT. YOU COULD USE ANY FLAVORING YOU WANTED, TO PUT YOUR OWN SPECIAL TOUCH ON IT. I ALSO BEAT IT ON MEDIUM SPEED ON A LG KITCHEN AID MIXER.
My mother took a box cake and covered it with this icing. The recipe says it covers two 9-inch layers but after some shaping my mother got to cover three with some left over for decorating. It turned out beautifully. The only reason I give it four stars is because it's a little too sweet for my taste. Otherwise with it's simplicity, ease and quickness it would be five star in my book.
All I could taste was the sugar
The taste of the icing was good, but I found the consistency of the icing to be very hard to work with. The recipe was very easy to follow.
