I made both the chicken and the sauce; excellent! The chicken skin was crispy and a nice colour, and the sauce to me, was outstanding. It's all I use now. I also added the cumin, chili powder, Dijon and some cayenne, as I like a bit of heat; adds nice depth to the sauce. It tastes very good on ribs as well. Very versatile BBQ sauce.

This recipe is my all time favorite for roasting chicken in our Big Green Egg. It always turns out amazin!. People beg for the recipe. I make double batches of the rub and sauce and keep it on hand for spontaneous chicken cooking events. We also use the rub and the sauce for Turkey Breast. We prop the breast up over the beer can and while it may not be as great a fit as the chicken, it tastes fantastic. Just a great all around rub and sauce recipe as well; try it on brisket. It's awesome!

I was looking for a simple barbecue sauce recipe and found this version to be quite easy. I did change a few things the first time around by using fresh garlic (2 cloves - chopped and onions (1/5 of an onion - chopped which I sauteed and pureed into the sauce. The end result was good but I wasn't quite happy with it so I decided to add the following and it came out great: 1 teaspoon chili powder, 2 teaspoons dijon mustard, 0.5 teaspoon paprika, few dashes of cumin, few dashes of maggi seasoning sauce. The chili sauce definitely helped bring out the smokiness. Try it. I'm sure you'll like it. JP from NJ

I can only reiterate the praises of other reviewers. This is outstanding, pretty easy to prep, and the rub and BBQ sauce will last for future endeavors. I will be trying the rub and sauce this weekend on ribs. The only thing I would suggest is to check your chicken's internal temperature at one hour and take it off the grill at 170?. Cover with foil for at least 10 minutes to allow juices to absorb. As this happens, the chicken will continue to cook to the 180? internal temperature. Also, if you like beer can chicken, buy a beer-can chicken cooker. It makes the whole process so much easier.

The sauce is great, the secret is letting it simmer for about 8 min. Then add 1 teaspoon of brown sugar. :

This chicken is crisp on the outside, very moist inside and the rub and sauce is the best I have ever made! Perfect!!

I used the Big Green Egg heating it with a constant 350 degrees with the plate setter. I did two chickens. I used about twice as much rub but used only a couple of dashes of cayenne. It took about an hour and 3/4. My family raved. I will definitely do this again. BBQ sauce was very good but a bit too thin. I'll have to work on that one. But we loved it.

Made exactly as written except after the bird had cooked for 1 hr. we basted with the sauce. We only basted a few times. The bird was absolutely delicious.

The beer can chicken is excellent, but I have to say that the best value I got from this recipe is from the rub and barbecue sauce recipes. I use the rub on everything--it makes a perfect rub for beef brisket. And the barbecue sauce gets rave reviews from everyone who tastes it. My husband won't use bottled barbecue sauce anymore, he loves it so much. But the cola barbecue sauce is so easy to make, there's no reason to ever buy bottled again!
Home run recipe.
