My kids loved this exactly as written, although I did add 1 tsp. of instant coffee granules and 1/2 tsp. cinnamon because I wanted it to accent the Mexican sheet cake I made. Also, I haven't used a double boiler in about 20 years. (Don't even own one anymore. The butter and chocolate melt well in the microwave. Just follow the directions on the chocolate box.

This was so easy and turned out delicious. I followed other reviewers' advice and increased the chocolate to 4oz, the butter to 4 TBS, and decreased the powdered sugar to 2 cups.
It's still very sweet but it doesn't overwhelm the chocolate flavor.
My kids loved it!

I took the comments of others and decided to cut back on the sugar and amp up the chocolate. It tastes good and I still had plenty to ice a 2 layer 9in cake. The only problem is (like all other butter cream frostings I've tried it gets crusty. I don't think the recipe is at fault, it is just me. I've tried beating it more, I've tried beating it less. I've tried beating everybody who comes into my kitchen while making it, and I can still only make a crusty frosting. I blame the weather here.

This is a great chocolate icing. I used it on an ice cream cake and it came out very nicely! (it hardends in the fridge/freezer like a ganache I did find it to be too sweet for my taste, so I added another square of chocolate and another tablespoon of butter. I don't know how you could ice any cake with just that amount of icing; I had to double the recipe and if you like a lot of icing, you might want to triple it! all - in - all very tasty! I'll use it again

This frosting was so sweet, I had to add more butter and 3 more squares of chocolate (! and a little cream cheese. It was still too sweet after adding 2 squares of chocolate, so I took a portion of the frosting out and added the 3rd square. Then it was DELICIOUS.

I was looking for an easy recipe for chocolate frosting for my husbands birthday cake. This was it. Plus I had all of the ingredients and did not have to run to the store. Easy and delicious.

I made this for a friends birthday cake last year and everyone loved it. This year they are demanding I make the cake again!! It was great and so simple its pointless in buying premade.

this frosting came out very shiny, but not fluffy. it was a bit oily and didn't have a good chocolate flavor. it'd probably be good for frosting a cake that needed to be really smooth but it was way too stiff for cupcakes. i added a little sour cream to it and that made it softer.
