I was looking forward to this intriguing twist on an American classic, but was very disappointed. Although I love star anise and used good quality orange juice, soy sauce, etc., the glaze took a lot of watchful time to cook down (be sure to use a high-sided pot and ended up having a medicine-like taste. Better to stick with a maple or brown sugar glaze.
The substitution of chicken broth for the traditional milk was not pleasing, and the addition of the sesame oil overpowered the gravy, resulting in a nasty taste.
The biscuits had good, strong orange and ginger flavor, but were dry. Here, it may have been my execution, but 2 1/2 tablespoons of baking powder seems like a lot. Perhaps it should be teaspoons. That said, the biscuits were the best thing about this dish, and keep the rating from being any lower. But I would suggest searching online for another orange-ginger biscuit recipe.
Overall, this was a major disappointment and certainly not work the time and effort.
