I just used the dumpling part of the recipe into my own homemade chicken soup. I did use less butter than what was suggested and just added a splash of my own chicken broth from the soup I had made. I can say it was tasty, complimented my soup and held well in the broth. Good recipe.

This is such a hardy soup and its perfect for winter. Insted of using barley I used orzo ( type of pasta that looks like rice. Next time i make it however I will use a bigger pot so the dumplings can float to the top!

Loved this soup! I used half of the barley and the full 6 c. broth. Also used half the nutmeg and added 1Tbsp of parsley to the dumplings. The soup froze very well. I would agree the dumplings sometimes don't hold together as well but wasn't a big deal.

I made this last night and think it tastes great. I loved chicken and dumpling as a child and have now found a recipe that reminds me of that time. The dumplings hold up well sitting in the broth overnight.
My only thought is that the dumpling are defiantly not low-fat as they contain 1/2 cup butter. This is partially why the soup is so good once they are added though! I may try to reduce the amount of butter and see what happens...
Here is how I altered the recipe:
-Omitted barely (since reviews were not great about it
-Added dried thyme (it goes so well with chicken
    -Used dried parsley
    -Used frozen Italian green beans
-Used store bought Rotisserie chicken (I actually make my own often but was pressed for time

This recipe makes a ton of soup and not sure how well it freezes so invite company/family to share.
