skip the grilled onions and use chopped white onions, sport peppers, tomato, bright green relish, kosher dill pickle, celert salt, yellow mustard only, and nothing other than a vienna dog on a steamed poppy seed bun. Save the grilled onions for the polish sausage but that's a whole other conversation...moment of silence for Maxwell Street.

Salsa does not belong anywhere near a vienna dog, you should be ashamed of yourself. :^

I don't know where all these people come up with their variations but, after 70 years of eating Chicago Hot Dogs I can set you all straight.
Bobby got it right except for 3 things.
    1. Use chopped white onions. Not grilled!
    2. The Vienna hot dogs are steamed, Definately not grilled or boiled!
    3. The peppers must be sport peppers.

Regardless of your personal favorites the majority of Chicago hot dogs stands/carts boil their hot dogs.

They are not rolled or grilled.

    That's the fact

Was born and raised in Chicago (1938. This recipe helps make a terrific sandwich. Customarily, the Chicago hot dogs are cooked on a machine with long, narrow metal roller and the hot dogs cook while slowly turning.. Bobby's style of using bbq...still delicious. Make sure you buy the Vienna brand of dogs and do steam a poppy seed bun. Enjoy!

This is the best dog on the planet from the best city on the planet.

Mr. Pickle Hater you missed the point of a "Chicago" dog. Embrace the green relish... otherwise it's not a Chicago dog.

The above is the REAL Chicago dog. I have NO idea where Mr. Flay came up with the grilled onion idea.

You've got it right, except for the onions. At most of the great restaurants & stands, the onions are fresh and chopped - usually not grilled. Otherwise, this is the best hot dog on the planet! Use Vienna dogs, steamed poppy seed buns and don't leave out the celery salt!

The elements are all required to be chicago style including the sport pepper. I have tried, when traveling , other versions of the hot dog especially chili dogs but this dog is so complete so flavorful that I cannot bring myself to order anything else when it is on the menu. The wiener must be Vienna, David Berg has its fans and is good if garlicky. One thing a Chicagoan cringes at is even being asked if they want catsup on it! Many places offer a good Chicago style dog. The pickle must be crisp and the chopped onions are best if nearly minced. The poppy seed buns must be totally fresh and steamed just right . Mary Ann is the brand.

Recipe is great without the pickles and pickle relish, I replaced these with chunky salsa with awesome results.
