Fixed this for a ladies brunch, along with Paula's tomatoe pie. I omited the bread, I just didn't think it was necessary especially since we were having the pie. It's a keeper

To me when it says "cooked unpeeled red potatoes" that means to cook them and doesn't need to be in the instructions. It's an absolute given. It's terribly unfair to rate it lower because the recipe wasn't followed properly. Love the recipe though!

First of all the ingredients called for cooked unpeeled red potatoes in the actuall cooking directions it does not specifically tell you to cook the potatoes which would of been helpful since I followed the directions to a tee so fyi

Second one of these in a week is now in the fridge for it's overnight stay :
Made to recipe first time, with the exception of adding 3 extra eggs and 1 cup 1/2&1/2, as the mixture didn't even come close to touching the potatoes. Not having seen the episode, not sure how this was presented.
#2- up'd the game: 2# of sausage, 12 eggs and the allotted milk, 1/2 a loaf of white bread and a whole bag of thawed frozen hash browns, in a 9x13 deep pan! Plan is to start it in the oven with no cheese to allow the hash browns to cook a little, then half way through top with cheese. Figure it will take it at least 60 min, if not a tad more. Also, sprinkled the bread with Old Bay before layering the mild sausage.
I have a house full of company, so this will be a great pop it in the oven, enjoy coffee with friends, self serve breakfast, and everyone can help themselves later in the week with left overs.
Happiest of the New Year......and thanks for sharing this recipe.
    Cheers!

Thanks, I made it with Bacon instead. But, it was great!! It was quick and easy to throw together. I give it 5 stars. As a professional cook, Right On!!

This was the hit of my Christmas morning brunch. I used fresh breakfast sausage from the butcher. I cooked the mushrooms in the same pan that the sausage had cooked in to pick up the flavors from the pan, also because I didn't want the raw mushrooms weeping into the casserole. I used hashbrowns instead of the red potatoes. The shredded potatoes mixed with the shredded cheese looked really nice.

The recipe called for 2 cups of cheese, but stopped after 1 cup because it really looked like enough. I hate a dish that is overloaded with cheese. I think I will add a little more dry mustard to the egg mixture next time.

Finally, I baked it in a 9x13inch pan for 30 minutes and it was still a little wet in the middle. Next time, I will add 10 minutes to the baking time. I didn't understand the direction to let it bake until it does not jiggle. The egg mixture only filled the pan halfway and didn't really jiggle before I put it in the oven.

Our PTO moms volunteered to bring a breakfast/brunch item to the school for the teachers and their new school year meeting. I did not have a casserole recipe so i broused the site and found this one. I always have great sucess with Paula's dishes. I left a copy of the recipe with the casserole on the table. When i came back later to get my pyrex the dish was empty and so was the recipe! The teachers loved it and shared the recipe with each other. Thank you for making me look good! My husband wasn't happy that i pulled it out of the oven and took it right to school, so i promised him i will make it for him this weekend!
i made it the night before and baked it for teachers the next day.
i did pre-cook the potatoes and put in the mushrooms raw and it only took 35 minutes to bake. i did add extra cheese on the top.

I used hash browns and warmed them up then added them. Otherwise it was exactly like the recipe, including the hot sauce, which isn't enough to make it spicy. I put the cold dish into the cold oven while the oven heated , and 30 minutes was perfect. Delish!

Both recipes with and without mushrooms are great tasting and cook at the same temp and time. However in reading the following reviews, I decided to try the 9x13" casserole and baked at 350' for the recommended 30 min. They both came out perfect. Also added one extra cup of cheese to tops, and it sealed the deal! Thanks for ideas! Mushrooms did not need to be precooked, used presliced baby bells. I microwaved red potatoes, covered tightly for ten min til fully cooked.
