I did as other reviewers did, and used beef broth to thin. This soup was fantastic. Doubled the recipe to take to a potluck, and people just gobbled it. Will make again and again. Thanks

This recipe is ok, but not as good as I thought it would be. The show did say to use instant rice, but I used raw rice like the recipe said, 1 cup of raw rice in these meatballs is twice as much as you need. Also, make sure you use ground meat with a good amount of fat like 80/20 because I used 90/10 and all that rice, the meatballs were like rocks. Cut the brown sugar back to about 2 tablespoons . The broth is very thick, I had to add beef stock to thin it out, a lot, like a quart, needed to add water at the end too. The lemon juice and raisins add a lot of flavor, wouldn't skip that part.
I will probably skip the ketchup next time I make it, it's too sweet and thick and the tomato broth doesn't need it with all of the other flavors going on.
All in all, I wasn't too impressed with this recipe, but my husband loved it and I will probably keep making it until I get it just right.

Delicious! Makes a lot - neighbors loved leftovers! Show did state instant rice and that's what I used. Used beef stock instead of water. Cut brown sugar back to 1/4 cup and then added a couple Tblsp later to reduce acidity; cut ketchup back to 1/4 cup. Used 28 oz can crushed tomatoes. Added one packet Sazon Goya seasonings for the heck of it -- good choice! Didn't do lemon juice or raisins. Probably added 1+ cups of water later on to thin soup. After cooking times...let it simmer for about 1 hr to let flavors develop. Can't wait to try leftovers today.

I concur. Less sugar and ketchup. Yummy!

Yummy recipe. I substitued quinoa for the rice, chicken stock for the water and stevia for the brown sugar. I also omitted the ketchup. The recipe just doesn't need it. Next time, I will simply brown the ground meat and seasonings and add it to the soup and add the quinoa in seperately to cook in the broth. The meatballs are a nice presentation but the soup will be just as tasty and faster to prepare without the meatball step. Finally, while the lemon juice and raisins are a nice touch, the recipe really doesn't need them either. The soup is full of flavor and quite healthy without the extras.

It was tasty, but too much tomato and sweetness. I also don't like raisins. Listen to the other reviewers Cut back on the sugar, paste and ketchup! I did not try it with beef broth, although I did add a bit of water. Also, when reheating it, the water kind of disappears and you're left with a glaze topping your meatball cabbage so definitely add more water, err beef broth :

Heaven in a bowl-- Please try this recipe if you like hearty soup. I like recipes like this because in every bowl, every food group is represented! The only thing I did different was I only added 1 Tablespoon of brown sugar and I used "Simply Heinz" ketchup which does not have added sugar. Don't leave out the lemon, it netralizes and does not add a lemon flavor. I must admit, I felt kind of tempted to leave out the raisins but, they were amazing, they add a little burst of sweetness---you don't think to yourself, "Hey, I just ate a raisin"...it is very suttle. This was a great surprise and a total keeper!! The kids loved it!! And my husband said it was one of the best soups I ever made!! I said, "Hey, what about my amazing Chicken Soup??"...he said, "sorry, this is better!" Enjoy!

I am so mad that I didn't read some of the reviews before I made this soup....WAY too sweet. I will significantly reduce the amt of brown sugar next time (to like a T or two vs 1/2 cup. I also added 4 more cups of liquid at the end...

My grandmother always made polish pigs in a blanket and they are time consuming so I am excited about this recipe if or will be next time. I also added panko and 1 egg to the meatballs and then added the rice to the soup at the end.

LOVED THIS!!! When it came time to add water to the tomato mixture I added beef broth. Also made my meatballs out of bulk Italian Sausage and ground beef. My boyfriend LOVED this and so did I! An absolute keeper!

Made this soup for my husband and he loved it. I wasn't sure how I would like it but I ended up loving it as much if not more than my husband. I followed the recipe except for the canned whole tomatoes instead I used a can of crushed tomatoes as I swear that is what they used on the show, however, since it gets blended I don't think it matters. The leftovers were even better the next day. This will be a favorite for years to come.
