This recipe is an update of a classic Polish recipe - Pigs in a Blanket which is somewhat sweet and uses raisins in the sauce. I reduced the brown sugar to a large pinch and used beef stock instead of water. I used brown rice - which needed more time to cook. And on the show, they used a 28 oz. can of crushed tomatoes and an immersion blender - which is what I did. I didn't have any sour cream so I used some plain Greek yogurt - which worked great and is probably better for you. This is a great twist on an old dish - great job.

A tasty sweet/sour combination. My daughter thought it was too sweet but my husband and I liked it. You can always squeeze in more lemon juice or add a dollop of sour cream to individual bowls. The only substitutions I made were using chicken broth instead of water (an entire box, so about 4 cups and jasmine rice instead of regular white rice because I was out of it. I also used crushed tomatoes instead of the whole peeled tomatoes because I swore that is what they used on the show. Besides, you are going to blend them anyway. I also used an immersion blender which makes for easier clean-up! The meatballs/rice took much longer to cook-probably 30 minutes longer. I have a feeling this soup will be even tastier tomorrow after the flavors all meld together. I do feel like the meatballs could have used a little something else-maybe some hot sauce, more cumin, garlic powder, etc. I'll make it again if my family requests it.

Very Good! This recipe was a little sweet but we enjoyed it. I did add two packets of Sazon (Goya and had to cook the meatballs about 45 mins to get the rice done. I agree that it needs a little heat. I will probably add a can of Rotel next time and cut back on brown sugar. Great recipe. Thanks!

I agree with other reviewers - this soup has great flavor but is a bit sweet. My four other family members though LOVED it.
I used brown jasmine rice and that worked well with the meatballs.
This recipe is really easy to make. Transfering the tomato mixture to a blender was not messy.

Loved it! Yes, it is on the sweet side, but I think it works. I think it would be interesting with the addition of a little heat - maybe some red pepper flakes. Still, we liked it lots just as is.

i went with 2 healthy tablespoons of brown sugar and 1/4 cup ketchup and it is still too sweet. I also went beef broth instead of water. I'm going to try to cut the sweetness with more broth as well. Thanks for the advice. I should have checked the reviews before cooking.

I agree with other reviewers that this was too sweet. Also way too much tomato stuff. Additionally the liquid was very underestimated. I added a 32 oz carton of beef broth and then another 2 - 4 cups of water. That seemed to cut the sweetness, diluted the tomato and brought it to the right consistency. Rather than transfer the soup to a blender in the early step I used an immersion blender....less clean up. All in all a nice winter stew with revisions. Might benefit from some hot sauce.

Listened to the others...sounded too sweet, no sugar or ketchup, ugh raisins - too much tomato paste, cut back on it. Throw in veggie broth instead of water, I could not put meatballs in there cuz my husband is suffering a gout attack...so making a turkey saute with lots of herbs on the side to toss in if you like...love the cabbage, Amazing aromas from my kitchen right now. I really enjoyed your episode!

Wonderfu!! One of the best soups I have ever made, such good flavor! It was on the sweet side, but I liked that, so maybe cut back on the brown sugar if you prefer. I made it with ground turkey instead & it was great. I did not use the raisins & lemon this time, but will the next time to see the difference. I am going to pass this one along to my cooking family/friends!

I made this exactly as the recipe instructed. There are 5 of us and not one liked this soup. It was too sweet and had no real tasty flavor to it. Even the meatballs were bland. With all the ingredients in this soup, I expected something delicious but we were all very disappointed. Save yourself the time and expense and don't bother with this recipe.
