I made 3 of these pies for Thanksgiving and they all left the table within an hour, every one loved them. For the past 10 years I used my mother-in-Laws recipe for sweet potatoe pie. I miss placed that recipe and found the Neely's on the internet. The only thing I did differently was boiled my sweet potatoes instead of baking them.

This pie was a disaster. I followed the recipe and for some reason it came out white. Don't waste your time.

I agree with a couple of the others. My family is from Louisiana and Arkansas. Never have I heard of using ginger or allspice in this recipe. As stated below by Myra, everything else is on point. One thing I would change is the evaporated milk. I would use sweet condensed milk as Alena has stated below. Also, most importantly sweeten to your own taste.

I made 2 of these pies last year for the Thanksgiving holiday. My friends loved it and so did my picky 2 1/2 year old (at the time. I will definitely make it this year and will try either the sweet condensed milk or heavy cream instead of the evaporated milk as suggested by previous reviewers. As with any recipe, I feel that it's good to taste and tweak recipes until the taste is something that you prefer. But basically, the suggested recipe is definitely a keeper. This was great! Thank you.

In defense of Myra in Chicago, I have never had a good, true, southern sweet potato pie with ginger or allspice. I come from a long line of great southern cooks and none have ever included ginger or allspice in their ingredients for sweet potato pie. I tried the Neely's pie and was disappointed. I did not like the flavor nor was it sweet enough.
For those that had trouble getting the sweet potatoes smooth, try mashing them while they are still hot along with the butter. You may also put them through a potato ricer or food mill if available.
I believe everyone has different likes and dislikes that's why there are so many variations of classic recipes.

This pie is delicious! My family loved it!!!! The only thing I did differently was substitute evaporated milk with sweetened condensed milk. That made the pie sweeter. Can't wait to make it again for the holidays.

The pie and topping were good, after I finally got the sweet potatoes smooth by putting them mashed into the blender with the rest of the filling. They were baked long enough, but were just lumpy. It would also be so much better to know the measurement of the sweet potatoes (in cups or even weight instead of "4 medium" . Medium is relative and you don't know if you have too much or not enough until the pie is baked. The amount of sugar was perfect, but I did add more spice (1/8 tsp is useless.

The results were fantastic. As my brother is diabetic, I substituted the sugars: 1/4 c. "Whey Maple Sugar" and 3/4 c. "Whey Gold Sugar." No one should deprive themselves of this dessert.

This recipe was overall good but it lacked the sugar and spice that all sweet potato pies have. I had to double all the ingredients except the butter to get that sweetness i felt it was missing. Also the mixture came out lumpy. Next time i will read the reviews first.
