Makes me happy! Family funeral tomorrow and was full of tears. Watched this show and it lifted my spirits. Who can't help but laugh when Guy tucks into a softshell crab sammich with such gusto? And the long-distance raw oyster catch? Nothing but net! That's skill.

My family has this stew every Chrstmas Eve. ( I make it all year around, love it!My Mom is 86 and has made it like this as long as I can remember. One thing she adds is celery salt and balck pepper to taste.

This is good old fashion oyster stew. East coast restuarants use this and ask you how many oysters you want in your bowl of stew.

I agree with Steven. I think the previous reviewer may have never had Oyster Stew before. This recipe is the traditional recipe for the dish. It's almost exactly the recipe I have used myself for years. Potatoes do not belong in Oyster Stew, the reviewer may want to find a recipe for New England Clam Chowder if they want to use potatoes in a thicker "chowder" type dish.

The previous reviewer must not have eaten much Oyster Stew. The Oyster Stews I have had have always been more of a soup. The issue here is did it taste good. There is always a nitpicker in every group. I bet that if you looked at the video of the show it was made on it would not look like a true stew.

This is little more than oyster soup, and watery soup at that. You can 'doctor' it up to become a passable stew by adding diced potatoes...approx 1/4 to 1/3 of the level of the liquid. Cook ALL ingredients BEFORE adding in the oysters. The oysters need only a few minutes to cook so add them about 10 mins before serving the stew.

Anyone who would pass this recipe on 'as-is' should be horse whipped!
