Chocolate Cake

  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup boiling water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare two 9-inch cake pans by rubbing with butter, sprinkling with flour and tapping out extra. In a large bowl combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Mix together with a wooden spoon then set aside. In small bowl combine eggs, milk, oil and vanilla. Beat well with hand mixer. Slowly add boiling water and mix. Add wet ingredients to flour mixture and fold and stir until smooth. Pour batter into pans, dividing evenly. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Remove cake from pans and cool on racks.

    My cake turned out delicious. Everyone loved it and said I can make it again anytime.
    This cake is very good. I used cake flour instead of regular flour, hot coffee (Starbucks French Roast) in place of the water and butter for the vegetable oil. This cake is good without any icing, but tastes awesome with mint flavored buttercream icing too.
    For myself and all who tasted this recipe, it was UNANIMOUS! The flavor was fantastic and the moist texture of the cake was off the hook!
    Mine flopped..overflowed into my oven and was a total mess.

    After reading all the reviews, I thought I would give it a try. I saw that some had trouble and figured that would be me. To my delight, this cake came out perfect. I loved the density, the flavor as did those I shared this cake with. My only concern was the amount of time that it took me to put it all together. I know it was because it was my first time making the cake. I am looking forward to making this cake again.
    This cake was so good! I love baking with simple and inexpensive ingredients while still getting a great result. For those of you who didn't have a good result, maybe your baking powder or baking soda was too old? I also substituted with sunflower oil (because it's what I had in the house at the time and I used 1/4c less sugar and it still turned out great. Will definitely make this again.

    This was simply amazing. I didnt trust the batter, but boy, as it came out of the oven all most and steamy and chocolatey, i was like to hell with my diet!.... Truly an easy and lovely cake to make
    The cake was really watery when I put it in the oven, but it did turn ot super moist. I would highly recommend cutting down on the water to 3/4 cup. I will try it again with less liquid. I mixed it together for our Christmas get together. Both the kids and the adults loved the taste and thought the cake was really moist. I also threw in 3 tablespoons of nutella to enhance the flavor.
    Really easy to bake. Was a little concerned about some of the negative reviews but it came out really nice!

    I made this recipe, my husband, and son loved it. I thought it was "ok". It had almost a greasy texture to it, but moist. But the men in my family seemed to enjoy it and say it was great. Very easy to make. Apparently my husband now wants it for his Birthday cake. I made a chocolate frosting to go on it, maybe next time I will try Cream Cheese frosting.
    I used this recipe to make cupcakes for my family and everyone loved them! I sifted the flour, cocoa, baking power and soda. I personally did not try them but I definitely got great reviews. My mother told me she would eat all of the cupcakes if she could. I used cathy lowe's recipe for cream cheese icing and together, they're a total home run.
    I love this cake, very moist and fluffy. I made it 2 hours ago. I sift everything, the flour, cocoa, and sugar. I mixed it together with a hand whisk (wooden spoon wasn't helping). I also mixed each wet ingredient one at a time together with a hand whisk. I only baked it for 25 minutes. I started to smell it, so I checked it, and it was ready. FYI: My batter was very runny I was nervous about it BUT my cake rose perfectly.
    I was so excited to make this cake after reading the reviews! it sounded amazing. i mixed the batter, put it in my buttered/floured tins, let it bake in the oven, the good smells of chocolatey goodness filling my nose. Tested the cake with a knife, you know, all that good stuff. took the cakes out and let them rest. :) I was so stoked to try it. I called my cousin down to taste the cake and she said "Yuck". :( I had my mom taste the cake, same thing. my little sister said it tastes like Cocoa puffs. I am very discouraged :( I followed this recipe to the dot and it wasn't very yummy. I won't make it again. While the cake was moist, it wasn't good... :/

    I love this recipe.This was my first time baking chocolate cake,and it taste awsome.
    I chose this recipe as my very first attempt at baking a chocolate cake from scratch and I have to tell you it came out pretty darn good. My co-workers were very impressed and so was my boyfriend. It was delicious and pretty damn easy to bake.
    I love Love LOVE this recipe! I've used it on countless occasions and everybody always finds it delicious. Being a college student, I love rich, moist, fudgy cakes, so I add a cup of chocolate pudding to this recipe when I make it for my friends.WARNING: This makes for a VERY rich cake, and not everybody can handle the chocolatey awesomeness. Cathy, you've got a winner here!
    I'm sorry, but I thought this was disgusting. I followed the directions and even went back and checked. Nasty. Will never make this again.
    It was good but i thought it was to spongy but maybe it will get better after a day and heres a great chocolate frosty recipe

    add 1/3 cup of milk, 1cup sugar, and 6tbs of butter but on oventop on high stir constaly when it starts to boil keep stirring for 1 min then put 7 ounce of semi-sweet chocolate chips stir in till thickens
    make sure everything is ready before frosting its not good when you leave it alone
    This cake was heavenly good! I shared it with co-workers and they really liked the taste and moistness of it. I will cotinue to use this recipe and get creative with a filling.
    I have made this cake so many times and it seems to taste better everytime. It's such an easy recipe that my teenagers make it everytime they crave for cake.

    I have made this cake once and it was very good, everyone loved it. I just tried making it again but put in 1 1/2 tbsp. baking soda instead of 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda. Anyone have any suggestions or am I out of luck!?
