Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 2 (9-inch) pie plates; set aside.

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream together butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, beating until incorporated. Beat in the vanilla. Add flour mixture, a little at a time, and mix until fully combined. Fold in the 3 cups chocolate chips and, if desired, the walnuts. Divide the dough between the prepared pie plates and smooth the tops with a spatula.

Bake about 30 minutes or until pies are golden and slightly firm to the touch but still soft. If the pies begin to darken too much before they are baked through, cover with foil and continue baking. Let pies cool completely on a wire rack.

While the pies cool, whip the cream and confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form (tips curl). Fold in the chocolate chips. Refrigerate whipped cream until ready to use. Spread the whipped cream over the pies and serve.

    I served this last night for a family dinner. Everyone loved it. I made it a day ahead and heated it in the microware for about 15 or so seconds. It was wonderful. I wouldn't put less chips like some suggested as this makes it fudgey like a pie should be. I will definitely make this again.
    Gee, I'm really bummed about the way this turned out. I followed the recipe to the letter, but added one more egg because the ones I had werent especially large. Couldnt wait to try it but when I did.....it was hard and dry ....no moisture. Any ideas why??

    I ADORE this pie. I changed up the chocolate to Ghiradelli's %60 cocoa flat chips, the flat ones melt so much better, and I make this in a big brownie pan to make bars instead of a pie, SO GOOD!
    This was DELICIOUS!! I used huge wide chocolate chips and it was too much chocolate so stick the regular. Also, i did not let it cool for longer than 10 min. I cut it warm and had it with Vanilla ice cream instead of whipped cream and it was absolutely amazingggggggg. Will make this again reallllll soon:. I also cut out the nuts

    I used to make a chocolate chip pie that was good, but that I stopped making for some reason. When I saw this recipe on Paula's Best Dishes, I made it that same night.

    After tasting this recipe, I immediately threw out my old one. My husband LOVED it. He usually doesn't like sweets, so when I put it in front of him he only had a few bites. Within 5 minutes his plate was totally clean!  
     
    I cut the recipe in half and it was pretty easy, with exception to the eggs (resulted in 1.5 eggs - I whisked 2 eggs and dumped some..no biggie. 3 other changes: 1. Used pecans instead of walnuts; 2. Used a mixture of chocolate chips and chopped up dark chocolate (didn't have enough chips; 3. didn't make the cream. 
     
    Next time, I will reduce the chocolate. I love chocolate, but it was a bit much. Halving the recipe called for 1.5 cups; I'll just use 1 cup. 
     
    Note: I did have to cover it with foil 20 minutes into baking; and had to bake it 10 minutes longer.
    Absolutely delicious. I only substituted the walnuts for pecans because I don't like walnuts, but absolutely delicious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Probably the best pie ever! It was soooo good. Only problem is trying not to eat the whole pie!!!
    My husband said to rate this pie with 10 stars even after telling him 5 was the most possible. Thanks Deen Brothers! Now I'll certainly be taking this pie to Thanksgiving.
    This pie was delicious. I halved the recipe as I didn't need two pies. My guests loved it. The whipped cream is yummy as well. I left out the walnuts due to nut allergy and WOW! Will definitely go in my recipe book!

    Absolutely amazing! I made this pie twice - once for my family during New Years and the other for my school! They LOVED it! Even when cooled, the chocolate melted in your mouth! Very quick and easy, even for beginners
    This pie was delish, easy to make and quick,everyone loved it.
     
    I however,made a half recipe as there were only 4 "diners" and one pie was enough, the recipe worked out wonderfully. I also cut down the chocolate chip amount, it was perfect and yummy without icecream or whipping cream! Worth a try!
    Just made this recipe - FABULOUS!!!! Couldn't wait to try it so I cut it while it was still a bit warm! WOW!!!! Will have it after work tonight as a treat, warmed, with some vanilla ice cream.     I made this in a 9X14 cake pan becaue I did not have two pie pans. Turned out like giant thick chocolate chip cookie squares. Very good while warm with vanilla bean ice cream on top. I used only 2 cups of chocolate chips and this was very very rich...so I cant imagine 3 cups...seems a bit much. And I used only 1 cup walnuts and it was perfectly balanced (the nuts and chips). I would make it again when I have a real sweet tooth and Im craving a chocolate chip cookie. Ice cream is the better addition in my opinion too.
    I made this for the 4th , everyone LOVED it. Was the hit of the day!
    I baked this pie for the 4th it was a very easy recipe. But i use two cups of chocolate chips not three. And one cup of the chopped nuts. the whip cream i did add some vanilla in to it.My family love thie pie i will bake it again.

    This is so easy and wonderful!! I couldn't wait to cut it, and can definately say - serve warm with ice cream!! I used Egg Beaters and it worked just fine. I used 1.75 cups of walnuts, but next time I will reduce that to 1 cup or leave them out altogether. They're an expensive addition, but they do add great flavor...however, the 2 cups is a bit much. Will definately make this again and again!
    Just made this for a party. Everyone loved it! It's great that the recipe makes two pies - they were both gone by morning! I agree with other reviewers that vanilla ice cream seems to be a better accompaniment that the whipped cream.
    This was deliciouss!! its just like a big cookie I loved it with vanilla icecreme on the side.. i put strawberries on top with the chocolate chips on the whip creme everyone loved it, it looked so pretty!! wud def make this again!

    LOVE this pie! I make it a point to try and figure out the recipes of all of my favorite dishes @ my favorite restaurants and I have found another one with this one!!! I changed it a little. The first time I made it my family said it was too sweet and my husband hates walnuts. So, I made it with 2 1/2 cups choco chips and used pecans instead of walnuts and now it's getting 5 stars from everyone!!! And I shortened the cooking time by 3-5 mins. THIS will be my go to pie recipe from now on! BTW, incredibly easy!
    Made this for Christmas Eve and my son in law said he thought it was possibly the best dessert he had ever had. Perfect soft chocolate chip cookie with ice cream. Life doesn't get any better than that. Also, I made the 2 pies recipe calls for and froze one for New Years Eve. Everybody loved it. Thanks Paula.
    If you are looking to make something that everyone will LOVE, make this pie! So much more delicious than just grabbing a choc chip cookie (and soooo easy!) I followed the recipe but used Cool Whip rather than the heavy cream (my kids also love it with vanilla ice cream) while their slice is still warm. Yummmm!!! I'm making more this week! :)
    Not a dessert to serve guests. It's just a large, rich, chocolate chip cookie. Is better served a little warm with vanilla ice cream to balance some of the richness and texture. The whipped cream was not a good match but was pretty with the chips in it. It's not a recipe I will repeat. (The raw dough tasted great!)
