I'm 78 years old and my mom made this ever Xmas, in the 30's this was a big treat. She made it every year except she didn't put in chocolate. Great addition.....

I was born and raised in So. CA and my mom was born and raised Texan. We used to make Potato candy w/o the peanut butter. We would make it different flavors and roll it in colored sprinkles so, no, it isn't a southern candy--it used to be made all over the country. There are so many flavors and ways to make this candy. I've never dipped it in chocolate before either. I have to try it this way. Thanks for reminding me about an old favorite.

I have never thought about putting chocolate inside. I have heard of chocolate on top. I have had this candy all my life. I made this for my husband when we first met. I would like to try your recipe it sounds very delicious.

I had forgotten I placed in this contest! Thank you all for the wonderful comments. As I am a freelance writer who publishes many online recipes, I can see now my mistakes within the recipe. Yes, keep adding powdered sugar until a thick, dough consistently similar to playdough is formed. The amount of sugar varies with every different potato. I prefer this candy without the chocolate although my children want it completely covered in it! Thanks again!

Sue's Needhams, is the traditional Maine potato candy. In Maine, Potato candy is called Needhams. Sue's Needhams have a creamy center made up of Maine potatoes, blended with all natural coconut, confectioners sugar, a splash of pure vanilla, butter and of course a secret ingredient that has made Sues Needhams award winning. Once you try'em you will Needham.

This is a recipe was handed down several generations on my dads side of the family and like the others with out the chocolate. This is a recipe that I think Paula Deen should make on her show soon for the holidays.
