Delicious! Great for a crowd! Prepare night before and bake next day. kind of receipe.
I used 95% beef to cut down on grease that would spill over in oven.
it stilled spilled..so be sure to put some foil on bottom of stove.
I cut down on sugar as advised by others.
I used a 12" decorative pie plate (Emile Henry
To fill pie plate to top..I added one cup more of the pasta (small shells..and a cup more of sauce. The receipe makes tons of sauce.
I did not add the cheese in the sauce as the filling has enough cheese in it.
I did not add more cheese to top either.
The receipie has perfect amount of cheese and perfect blend of cheeses for great flavor.
The sweet/basil sauce was great compliment to the cheesy filling.
Loved it and will make this again.
It is so much easier than making meatballs and pasta sauce for crowd.
everything in one pie plate! Looked great on the table!

This was tasty--the sauce was the best part. So glad I took the time to make it. However, 3/4 cup of sugar is too much. I'd cut that in half next time. (I had to add two more cans of tomatoes to cut the sweetness. The pie was was much better the next day for lunch all mixed up together.

OK, I LOVE THIS! The pie was so easy to make and the smells penetrating throughout the kitchen were so comforting! The taste was wonderful and it looked so impressive! All the senses were satisfied with this dish! I served it with an Antipasti Salad. Perfect~

Tips: 2 cups of sauce IN with the filling. Beware of tons of overflowing grease when the ground beef is cooking in the oven. 5 cups of COOKED pasta.
Mine turned out tooth-breakingly burnt. The inside though, was heaven and it was good the next day.

I could tell by the ingredients that this is just going to be wonderful. However, I have one question, why in the picture does it appear that the sauce is combined with the pasta but yet in the directions it states to add the sauce after the timpano is done? Also if you look at the cook time on the right side of the page it says over 4 hours. I'm sure it's a typo. Has anyone combined the sauce with the pasta before cooking? I am going to make this over the weekend. Looks delish!

I made a huge batch of this thinking some would go to the freezer.......wrong. The kids wouldn't leave it alone. Very good and a technique that can be tweaked for those of us who actually like vegies.

The great part is that you can just slice and have meals for 3 days or more.
