I gave this recipe a "poor" rating for unsafe kitchen practices. Boiling an unopened can of sweetened condensed milk could cause it to explode; there is a warning label on the can. Instead, use one of the methods listed under "Usage Tips" for "Making Homemade Caramel" on the Eagle Brand website:

I could not wait to try the recipe,as it looked so tasty on the show. It was easy to boil the can of condensed milk and then place it on simmer for three hours. I was so excited when it came out perfectly with the rich toffee color and great texture. My husband and I loved it, and I will definitely make it again! Excellent with coffee! I cheated and used a graham cracker crust and whipped cream. Fabulous recipe!! Claire you rock!!

Great recipe. Eat with a cup of coffee and slowly. Make sure you add salt to the crust. I love this dessert. Making it again!

First, let me say that I really liked this recipe! I had my husband, mother, father and brother try it as well. My mom liked the texture, but thought it was too sweet. My dad and brother said it was "ok" but a little too sweet and my husband took one bit and wouldn't eat it. He said it was WAY too sweet.

It was a simple recipe and very easy to make. Do need to let can cool just a few minutes and use gloves to hold while you pour out the toffee. If you wait too long, it does get globby.

I love sweet things, so I did really enjoy, but the majority said "no thanks" to my offer to make another:(

Yum!!! This was so easy to make and so tasty! I was surprised by the other reviews by people saying they had trouble with the recipe. Mine turned out great the first try. The toffee was as easy as Claire said it would be. Just simmered the can of sweetened condensed milk for 3 hours and it was yummy, creamy toffee. What a cool trick! The recipe was simple and easy and the Banoffee Mess was delicious! And Claire was right... I couldn't wait til it had chilled for an hour before I dove in! Thanks for a great recipe that I will definitely share with friends!

The pie was way too sweet - even for my sweet toothed husband! The whipped cream couldn't even cut the sweetness.

I really thought it was tasty and easy to make. Reminds me of banana cream pie with toffee filling.

When I went to purchase the sweetened condensed milk, every can said, "WARNING!!! DO NOT HEAT IN CAN!" Is this b/c of the contents turning to caramel/toffee? I have all the ingredients, but haven't tried it yet b/c I was concerned about the warning label!

All I can say is... OMG! First of all, thanks for the previous reviews. To those of you who had a hard time getting it to the butterschotch color that it should be...this is what went wrong. You have to start the can of condensed milk in a pot of water which is just covering the top of the can.Start the stove on high. Once the water gets to a hard boil, bring it down to about medium high. You should still see lots of bubbles and the can will prob be moving around on the bottom of the pot and making some clanging noises(this drove my boyfriend crazy.lol

I tried this last Saturday after watching the show, wow it was so good! I boiled the milk for the whole three hours and spead it on before it cooled too much (use a hot mit! and it was wonderful! My in-laws came over unexpectedly and my FIL was so excited to eat something he had just seen made on TV earlier in the day.
