This is a nice alternative to fried green tomatoes, although don't eat it because you're trying to watch your fat intake! The dish pairs the tart green tomatoes with the saltiness of the bacon and the result is a very nice casserole. I made it tonight using applewood smoked bacon which added a little sweetness as well. And, I used panko breadcrumbs in place of the fresh breadcrumbs, as a shortcut. I would definitely recommend this if you're looking for something to make with green tomatoes.

Fantastic! Saw the episode of Claire making this. Couldn't put the combination together, but wow it is great. The tangy green tomatoes with the sweet onions just made it. I made it today at our office and the reviews were over the top so I had to write my own. I am really liking her show. Keep up the good work!

This recipe is brilliant! The tanginess of the tomato and the sweet onions made a very memorable flavor combination. Also, the recipe works well with green zebra tomatoes.

Good vegetable dish! It seemed a good substitute (for me, anyway for even heavier comfort food dishes like Mac and Cheese. I have vegetarian friends, so I am going to attempt a non-bacon recipe using olive oil and applewood smoked seat salt. My sister made this for our family on a saturday night, I went right home and made for myself for lunches throughout the week. =

Wow. I'm southern (from Macon, GA, and LOVE fried green, baked green, any green tomato, and they are very available here in GA throughout the summer. This is a wonderful recipe. Can't go wrong with vidalias and green tomatoes. A good southern dish everyone should love!!

Awesome, I saw the episode where she made this several days ago and thought that there was no way it could ever be in the same catagory as a good fried green tomato. Boy was I wrong. I will be making this again and again. Very easy to make.

Such a good dish. Mine did turn out too watery but I am dealing w/ somewhat green tomatoes from Arizona. They just don't taste the same as the midwest. Anywho......I loved the white cheddar w/ the bacon and onions. This is such a hearty side that I could have just had this for my meal! I will be making this again for sure.

Absolutely delicious! I, too, used panko for the topping and added a pinch of sugar to the tomatoes. I'll definitely make this one over and over. We had it with grilled chicken, and it was a perfect side
    dish.
