This is a wonderful recipe! We tried this for Thanksgiving this year, and it was such a hit that we're making it again for Christmas.

We pureed all the onions with the sweet potatoes, because the slippery texture of the onions didn't seem quite right against the smooth texture of the main ingredient. When it was all blended together, it was heavenly. The carmelized onions worked as a "secret ingredient", adding so much flavor, and a fun twist on a classic.

This was awesome.......... my wife and friends loved this. Next time I will use less pepper because it was too savory. The item I did differently is that I boiled my sweet potatoes in a dutch oven till they were ready. Then I coated them and put them in the oven for 20 minutes; stirring them up at the midway point. I used a whole yellow onion.

Then I went to the food processor. I think next time I will use chicken stock instead of hot water.

    Great recipe!

I risked it and made these for Thanksgiving dinner and they were a HIT! These are unbelievably tasty. I hesitated with the amount of onions as well as a few other things, but went for it, followed the recipe with only a couple of technical tweaks (who can caramelize onions in 2 minutes anyway?...WELL worth it. Also...these are PALEO. Hallelujah.

So good! I made it twice in one week. I am taking over the sweet potato portion of Thanksgiving dinner. So as not to insult my mother-in-law the day of, I will prepare them two days in advance. They are great four/five days in, so why not make them ahead? That way I don't tie up the oven and I can just microwave them.

A fun substitute for mashed potatoes. Would have tasted better with more onions and I don't think the onions and the potato mixture should have been mashed together. I could see myself making more.

You had me at caramelized onions. These are the best sweet potatoes ever! Truly tasty - sweet and savory - my favorite combination. A few issues with this recipe though. Caramelizing onions takes longer than 2 minutes. I keep rereading to see if I'm reading that wrong. I slowly caramelized the onions for about 20 minutes over lower heat while the potatoes where roasting in the oven. Cut the potatoes into 1" chunks to roast more quickly. I also probably will not use the maple syrup in the roasting process as it just becomes a hard candy that sticks to the baking sheet. Absolutely delicious!

I've seen many people say that they added water - why not add vegetable, chicken or beef broth depending upon the recipe.

The sweet potato took about 1 1/2 hrs to roast in the oven at 375. 40 minutes is not enough time to allow the potato to roast properly. Next time, I'll roast them at 400. Other than that, I followed this recipe to the letter until I put it in the food processor. It was sticky like paste and I ended up putting about cup of water in it to thin it out, plus a 1/4 cup of whipping cream. Although, it tasted very good and was a hit, I think that adding chopped bacon would have added some smokey to the sweet. The caramelized onion in the mixture and on top was nice addition.

These sweet potatoes are some of the best I have ever had! The flavors are brought out with the roasting and the onions. Wonderful! Will definitely make again and again.
