I REALLY WANTED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE AFTER WATCHING THE SHOW TODAY. I WENT AND BOUGHT EVERYTHING AND WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED IN THE CARAMEL LAYER. IT TOOK A LONG TIME TO TURN GOLDEN AND THEN WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO SPREAD ON THE SHORTBREAD LAYER. I EVEN SPREAD IT WHEN THE SHORTBREAD WAS HOT TO HELP. NOTHING WORKED. IS THER SOME INGREDIENT MISSING IN THE CARAMEL THAT WILL MAKE IT POUR AS IT DID ON THE SHOW. I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE IT POURING LIKE THAT WHEN COOKED ACCORDING TO THE DIRECTIONS GIVE. THE LAYERS ALSO SEPERATED. VERY DISSAPOINTING.

BUT I STILL LOVE THE SHOW.

This is extremely easy to make and fantastic. My 4 year old cannot get enough of it! I cooked the shortbread for 25 minutes, cooked the caramel about 25 minutes until it was a medium amber NOT a deep brown. The shortbread was still slightly warm when I put on the caramel layer. For the chocolate I used melted semi-sweet chips and I put it in the fridge for 10 minutes. It cuts very easily and is perfect. I work full time and have a business. I love to cook, but with 2 children and my job, rarely have the time to make gourmet dinners which would be my preference. I will definitely be following the recipes on 5 ingredient fix. I cannot wait to try the ginger carrots and the buttermilk dressing as well as the lemon basil salmon!

These bar are really delicious. I make them for my kids as a special desert treat and they LOVE them. It does take closer to 30 minutes though for the caramel to brown. I like to substitute the chocolate for nutella or skip that layer all together and serve the shortbread and caramel with vanilla ice cream. Any way that you make them, they are really delicious and sure to be a please everyone from your little kids to your mother-in-law.

I have made something similiar to this for a long time. Try this..take your cans of sweetened condensed milk...remove the paper..place unopened cans in a dutch oven and cover with water. Boil the water for 3 hours..completely covering the cans the whole time. Let them cool over night, then when you open them, you have the thickened "caramel" without having to watch it the whole time it's on the stove.
Just a suggestion. Hope it turns out for each of you.

This recipe is truly delicious. Prepared the recipe in a 13x9 pan. The shortbread took 5 minutes longer in the oven for a nice golden bown appearance around the edges. The caramel was poured on the shortbread when the shortbread was slightly warm. After topping with the chocolate, I allowed the chocolate to cool for 45 minutes and refirgerated. Indeed a very sweet dessert. Serves niclely cut in to bars. Will definately make again along with a layer of peanutbutter. Very similar to eating a candy bar.

I followed the recipe. The caramel layer did take 30 mins. I let each layer cool. I then put in the frig for a little bit and then cut it. The pieces stayed together perfectly. I stored some at room temp. and some in the frig. I have to say, the ones in the frig are my family favorites. I will definitely make this again.

I liked these cookies but I have so many other great, and better tasting, recipes that I won't ever make these again. The shortbread layer was tasty but they were very crumbly and fell apart when trying to cut or eat them. No one was blown away by the flavor and desserts are the one thing everyone should look forward to. Give it a try if you are set on making these but I would spend your time finding a better recipe on this site.

These are delicious and rich. Made them for a BBQ this past weekend and everyone liked them. Really easy to make but note that the caramel layer takes longer than 15 minutes to thicken and turn golden (more like 30 minutes. It's a lot of stirring so it doesn't burn on the bottom of the pot but worth it!

I made this shortbread recipe this weekend and it was pretty good.. I would agree with some other reviewers that the middle of the shortbread didn't cook through all the way, but it was still yummy! Also, be careful on how long you cook the caramel.. It takes a little longer than 15 minutes and I almost forgot about it.

I made these this weekend for a family get-together. My in-laws, nieces, nephews - everyone loved them. I added toasted pecans and coconut after the caramel layer which created nice texture - next time I'll add them before the caramel so the tops are nice and smooth.
