I cook the beans with no salt. You can put 1/2 tea spoon of Baking soda.
When beans are soft i put in the other ingridients.

Excellent flavored beans, perfectly cooked in 4 hours..
I am confused as to how there were so many reviews indicating failures with this recipe, and wondered what went wrong.. I'm thinking possibly that the DO (Dutch Oven was not implemented, heat loss could be great in a "thin skinned pot" with out a good sealing lid..
I use my DO while camping and at home, always perfectly cooked meals come from it.. It is a time tested utensil, "hundreds of years", to make good food.
Tip:: to make your beans more creamy add a couple pinches of Baking Soda to the pot..

This recipe should be altered or removed from the site. I could not find one review in which the recipe was successful as written. I made it with the same result as most of the reviewers: I soaked the navy beans overnight and cooked for 11 hours. The beans never became tender. The flavor was nice, but the result was a huge disappointment, waste of time and bourbon. I don't understand the high rating.

I've made these beans several times and the things I did differently was to cook them for 6 1/2 hrs stirring every half hour in a heavy bottom pot, use pinto beans that I did the quick soak meathod, but boiling 5 minutes and leaving them soak 3 hours. I also use spring water and you should cook these beans on the stove top as you have better control over the cooking of the beans, like if you need more water when the humidity level is low in the house that day. Overall these are easy if you make some minor adjustments to fit your taste and the kitchen conditions for the day your cooking.

Sorry Claire, complete waste of money! Beans never cooked completely, even after 8 hours of cooking.

My beans never cooked. After soaking overnight I started them in a crock pot a couple hours before putting them in a pot on the oven. I have never had problems with beans before so not sure what happened. Dinner came and went but by the end of the night I just threw the beans away. I will note that they smelled really good, so it was a huge disappointment. A day later saw an ad for Bush Brothers Bourbon and Brown Sugar grillin' beans on TV...maybe will just do that next time!

I liked the flavor of these beans, but I had to cook them about twice as long for them to be as soft as I liked them.

I followed the directions for soaking the beans, but like others, they didn't soften. I didn't read the reviews before making, wish I had. I cooked them in the crockpot for 11.5 hours while I was at work. Still hard as rock!!! I have them cooking on top of the stove now but I don't think they will soften. What a waste of good bourbon

Came out awesome. <<<<< Bean soaking tip: i used to have problems getting dry beans to hydrate properly, and an old lady friend of mine told me one time, if you have a lot of chemicals in your local town/city water, you need to get some pure bottled or spring water, to soak and to cook them in... tried it and it worked perfect and to this day have never had another problem with the beans not cooking properly. now I always have a jug of spring water on hand....

I made these in the crockpot. Please note the amount of water listed in this recipe is not enough when making it in the crockpot. I had to throw out the first batch as it burnt. Add enough water so the liquid is approximately 2 inches above your beans and cook for 8 hours on low. I then transfered them into another pot and cooked without the lid on for a few minutes to reduce a little bit more of the liquid. I would make these again. I have never liked beans due to their mushy texture but they are not mushy when you make them from dried beans.
