Ok, so I cheated & used 4 5-oz canned clams with 2 extra bottles of clam juice, and substituted half & half for the heavy cream. The recipe still came out just great. For those who do have trouble finding clams (or simply want to cut the cost a bit, this is a fabulous recipe. Just strain the clams and use their juice in place of the broth and then add the clams at the end.

This soup worked out great but I changed a few things. Littlenecks are pretty easy to find, but use manillas instead of the cherrystones, which are hard to find. I added a little bit of roux (melted butter and flour to thicken it because I like a thicker chowder. With that small addition, it was excellent.

This is a very good Clam Chowder. I have to agree with Diana...whats so hard about finding clams. Cherrystone and littleneck are just sizes of clam. If you don't have a fresh fish market just go to any grocery store and get Manila clams (most common size. To Michelle....I'm thinking you didn't follow the recipe as you should have. If you had, it would have turned out thick and delicious like a chowder should. Recipe is very easy to make....albeit a little time consuming and expensive if you get all the ingredients Tyler calls for. The clams were 12.99 per dozen at Pike Place Market...so multiply that by 4....and you're looking at 52 dollars for the clams alone!! Yikes....but Yumm!!

They're always good and easily made even for the "new to the kitchen" cook.

However, Diana, not everyone has access to a fish market. We can get clams and oysters once in a while where I live. Usually, we have to order them. The reference to living in a cave is completely uncalled for.

This was easy to make and delicious to eat. I had to substitute with different kinds of clams because my fish store didn't have the kind Tyler used, but it was still great! I used light cream instead of heavy cream and it was still thick and rich tasting, but less fat and calories. I had leftovers for lunch the next day and it was even better. I will definately make this again.

Anonymous from 6/28/08: I don't know where you live (a cave somewhere but clams are easily found. I am not a professional chef and can find clams all over the place. How about not reviewing these recipes based on comments like yours that bring down the rating of a very wonderful recipe?
Let's base them on actually trying out the recipe. This clam chowder rocks!
    Thanks, Tyler.

This was the best chowder I have ever made. I had NO trouble getting the clams and the other ingredients are common items found in any grocery store. Go for it, you won't be sorry.

Normally I like Tyler's recipes but the more I'm trying his stuff, the more I'm thinking it looks better on TV than it tastes in real life (sorry Tyler!. This chowder is another example. I found it to be too liquidy and the broth, frankly, was too much work for not that great tasting a broth. I found it really lacked that "clam" flavor, even though we're using fresh clams!! I dunno...I'm continuing on my quest for a good clam chowder recipe. This was not it.

This is a terrific clam chowder. Great change of pace from our traditional chopped clams and salt pork or bacon recipe. And regarding chefs using regional ingredients--hats off to you! I have tried Flay's and Emeril's recipes with New Mexico peppers, New Orleans crawfish, etc., all available by mail order.

I am a Chef myself, and apreciate a good-looking dish as much as a tasty one...but isn't this going overboard for the home cook watching at home? Come on Tyler...it's not likely that many people have access to these clams easily. Please your fans and use products they can find easily and affordably
