Crock Pot Apple Butter Recipe

Serving Yield: 12 pint jars

  • 2 - 3 pounds (50 oz) jars unsweetened apple sauce
  • 3 pounds granny smith apples
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups apple juice
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • Peel and cut apples into small chips. Place all ingredients in the crock pot and stir. Cover and cook on low overnight (eight to ten hours). Remove cover, stir and taste. Add more spices or sugar if desired. Continue cooking for a few more hours, uncovered, until some of the liquid has evaporated and butter has cooked down a bit. Pour into jars and refrigerate. Serve over hot biscuits, toast, scones or eat it out of the jar.

Cover it loosely or use a large pot splatter-guard. It will spatter as it boils slowly, so I also cover nearby surfaces with towels. You don't want to seal it tightly because you want the steam to escape so it can reduce in volume and thicken. Hope that helps item not reviewed by moderator and published
I've had this in my crock pot for 20 hours now and it's still not thick the way I think of apple butter. It's consistency is more like thicker chunky apple sauce. I put a little of it in the blender to smooth it out and now I'm going to try a little cornstarch to thicken it. Any suggestions. item not reviewed by moderator and published
