I had some stale English muffin so decided to make this instead of my regular mac & cheese bake.
I used Fontina and mozzarella instead of gruyere, used a mixture of bacon and boiled ham, leeks in place of garlic, skipped the flour, the whole thing was nom nom nom but really the bread topping stood out!

This was amazing! I made if for dinner one night and brought the left overs to work and they even liked it warmed up. You can't beat the oozy cheese right out of the oven though! I cooked the onions longer (maybe 10 minutes to caramelize them more and added about a tablespoon of whole grain mustard (stole the idea from a restaurant that puts it on their croque monsieur sandwich and it was really good! Definitely a keeper!

This was wonderful. The cheese added a little bit of a bite. The bread topping is probably the best I've ever eaten. Will definitely make again.

This a winner. Some of these reviews make me laugh. Yes it is more work than a box of mac. Yes it is more expensive than a $1.00 box of mac. Yes it one of the best ever and you can substitute other meats and cheeses but the recipe is excellent.

This was not a bad recipe. However is was labor intensive. The vote at the tables was it was not a keeper. Too much work even for company.

This was good. I'll keep looking for a recipe, but this wasn't bad. No one was "wowed" at the table, but all agreed it was alright.

Never made mac n cheese before (except for boxed! lol this was really yummy, but i wouldn't rate this recipe as level easy. That's why I am giving 4 stars; also because my toddler didn't even take one bite :( So if you are preparing this for young children beware!

WOW. After the first time making this, it officially became the 'family mac n' cheese' recipe. The flavor is just incredible. If you're struggling to find the right baked mac dish like I was, you found it!
