I am really NOT fond of the traditional dish and we always seem to have leftovers that nobody wants to eat up. I made this recipe to take to my in-laws' and came home with a clean dish! Everyone loved it and my sister-in-law asked for the recipe so she could take it to her in-laws'. I think this might become a new Thanksgiving tradition for us!

Love it. Not a fan of prepared foods so when I saw this recipe using fresh mushrooms and leeks, I had to try it. I agree with previous posts about the mushroom sauce being so tasty that you don't need the green beans. I too have multipurposed the mushroom section of this recipe to serve over steak.

This recipe is wonderful. I hate the taste of canned cream of mushroom soup and of canned mushrooms, so I never eat green bean casserole. I watched the guys make this casserole on their show years ago and my mouth was watering. Trying not to eat all of the mushrooms while they are cooking in the cream is really hard. I have made this the last couple of years and it always is the first thing to run out..*** NOTE: doesn't travel without the leeks getting soggy though... make them when u arrive or use something else on top if u have to take it somewhere else and reheat it*** Didn't use the sherry because we do not like alcohol so I substitute a little broth instead.

The mushroom sauce is killer over chicken, or by itself... I don't even bother with the beans any longer, it's all about the sauce, we love it!

How many days ahead of time is it ok to make this recipe? I am making a lot of food for the Holidays and want to prep as much food as I can ahead of time....

I made this for Christmas two years ago because my sister is allergic to soy. Everything these days has soy in it. Especially canned and processed foods, like cream of mushroom soup and the french fried onions typically used in green bean casserole. I needed to find a recipe that made everything from scratch. This is just what I was looking for. Needless to say my sister was pleased that I went to the trouble and it was a hit with everyone at the table. In fact it was so good that everyone said it ruined the canned version for them. Once you eat this you will never want to make it any other way. This is devine! I wish the Hearty Boys were still around, but I am glad this recipe is. I make it all the time.

I found myself out of sherry while preparing this for a Christmas Eve meal, so I substitued Marsala Wine. It was delicious! My grocery had no leeks this time of year so it was topped with fried onions...everyone loved this dish. The best part was that I prepared the sauce a day in advance and the flavors married and the consistancy was terrific the next day.

Everyone loved this dish! Suggestions: may want to cut the amount of sherry or cook it down a little longer. Substituted 1/2 and 1/2 and canned fried onions and they were just fine.
    Enjoy!

This dish was a hit! Everyone loved it at Thanksgiving and even asked for the recipe. We didn't have leeks, this time, so we just left them out and it was still great; we're looking forward to trying them next time. Also, I would recommend using a higher quality sherry.
If you know anyone who is not a fan of the "popular" green been casserole recipe (or even if they like it this is a better and fresher option!
I'm sure this dish will be a staple at our Thanksgiving, every year, and possibly even Christmas!
