I did not use carrots, beef stock, or tomatoe paste and I minced 4 cloves of garlic instead of crushing 2. I also poured brown gravy over top of it all and it was by far the BEST Shepherd's Pie I have ever had.

hands down, the best shepherd's pie ever. the mashed potatoes with the cheddar really makes the difference - the flavor is wonderful and it's not to difficult. the first time i made it, i thought it was a lot of chopping and fussing, but i've gotten very good at it, and it really is a great one-dish meal.

I love this recipe. I always add more spices (thyme, rosemary, oregano, crushed red pepper and paprika, and use horseradish cheddar in the potatoes. Which only makes it more amazing. But its definitely really good the way the recipe is originally written too!

When searching out Sheperds Pie recipes, they all use the same basic veggies--onions, carrots, celery, peas, etc. Of all the S. Pie recipes I researched, I like this one best for its simplicity, ingredients, and measurements that fit my taste. I did add more broth b/c I don't like dry fillings. I had 2 very large portobello mushrooms and diced it up; it gave the filling a meatier consistency w/o adding more than the 2 pounds of meat called for. This is a comfort food, much like a beef or chicken pot pie, but lighter. I see these made into smaller baking dishes for serving up individual portions. I had a Shepherd's pie recently in a well-respected Irish Pub restaurant, and it wasn't half as good as this one is. All in all, an interesting way to use up those odds & ends in the fridge in a one-dish meal that can be made ahead of time--that helps too!

This recipe is phenomenal!!! My family is used to good food and this is definitely a favorite. It would be equivalent to Ruth's Chris five star restaurant . Will definitely make this again and again.

This is one of the best I had to try it prior to the party and then was so impressed that I made it for all my friends. They were all impressed and all loved it. I will suggest this to my friends in the resturant world

I LOVED this, it reminds me of something my british grandmother would make. I couldn't find ground lamb at the store that day, so oppted to use a "meatloaf" mixture instead. I'm not a huge fan of ground beef by itself and the combination of pork, beef and lamb add a little more complexity to the flavor. When sauteing the vegetables I added freshly chopped thyme and a dash of sage. I also listened to previous reviews and added additional worcestershire sauce. I can not wait to make this dish again. I plan on using all lamb next time and adding a little sherry to the mix.
