I love food and love to try new recipies. This was so much fun to make but my dumplings were hard and didnt have flavor, meatballs were the perfect consistancy but needed more flavor maybe garlic. I didnt use barley, and used 15 bean medley of dry beans that had lentils in it. The Broth and beans were wonderful. I may have screwed the dumplings up myself, but i think i will use can biscuits next time , and add garlic and thyme to my meatballs. I will definately make again just tweak it to my taste.

While I was making this my husband walked through the kitchen. When he heard what I was cooking he seemed doubtful he would like it. Surprise!!! He loved it. This soup is so full of flavor! The raisins are a delicious surprise. I need to work on my dumplings. A little tough, but I know it was me. I probably over worked it. This is definitely one of my top favorites!

I made this soup today and it came out just delicious. I made a few changes....After soaking the raisins in water I chopped them in the mini chopper because I wasn't too sure I would like big pieces of raisins in the meatballs. I also used sunflower seeds in place of pine nuts and I chopped them as well. The meatballs were really very tasty. The dumblings had a great flavor that gave the whole soup a fantastic taste. I love beans however next time I might leave them out and just use the lentils and barley. The beans made it so that there was a lot going on in the soup and honestly I was loving the meatballs and dumplings so much that I wouldn't have missed them if they were not in there! I will make this again for sure!!!!

I too used sunflower seeds instead of pinenuts in the meatballs. Instead of deepfrying the meatballs as suggested, my neighbor suggested baking at 350 for 20 minutes each sides. Wow! How easy and much easy and didn't stink up the kitchen with frying smells.
    Nice wholesome, belly sticking soup.

For a first timer with this soup it was really good. Next time no raisins for me and my family. Great for a rainy day!

THanks for a great supper Danny! Watched the show today and gave it a try as a surprise for the wife as she was working late. FYI...Cooking together with the family or friend will make the prep go quicker if you are slow like me it takes more than 50 minutes...lol. First time trying dumplings so here's a tip for everyone else so you don't make the same mistake I did. Make sure your dough is a little softer than you think it should be and don't overcook. : Other than that it was awesome. Trust Danny with the raisins they really work well. Couldn't find pine nuts at our local grocer so substituted sunflower seeds and they worked great. Have fun y'all!
