I saw the episode where this was cooked and was very excited to try it.

I modified it some by adjusting the quantities of the ingredients like a whole package of thick sliced bacon and a large can of diced tomatoes. I liked it so much that not only did I finish the pot in 2 days but I promptly cooked another batch. The second batch I used a little more lime which increased the acidity quite a bit. It was still quite delicious and it didn't last long.

I also cooked the corn bread that was done on the same episode and that was a complete success. Adding a can of corn to corn bread is such a great idea!

It was a cold, gloomy and rainy day when I made this yesterday and this was so comforting and delicious. It's extremely filling- my boyfriend and I had it for lunch and dinner and we still have leftovers for today which I can't wait to reheat. I cooked the bacon till just before it got a crunch to it, chopped it up, and then put it back in the pot when i added the beans. Other than that, i made no other changes and it is fabulous. Better than any black bean soup I've had at any restaurant. A must try!!!

The soup was very good but next time around I'll make some changes. I'd use half of the bacon and cook it until it's crisp and i'd cut back on the chili. Definitely add the beer. Does anyone have a specific recommendation for what type of beer to use?

I've made this soup twice now, and both times it has gotten RAVE reviews! One little change I made: I cooked the bacon until crisp and removed it from the pan. I cooked the onions in the bacon fat, and used the crisp bacon pieces as a garnish. It really brings the soup to a whole new level!

I like my soups more like a stew so I cut my bacon a little bigger. added 2 tsps of paprika also. without a doubt one of the best soups I've tasted. hit the spot on a cold day!!

I finally may get a night off from cooking since this is easy enough for my husband to make. It's so good and flavorful. And it has things men like...bacon, canned goods, and plenty. It's great!

I have now made this recipe several times. Like previous readers stated, i did cook the bacon until it was crispier, and use a smidge less cilantro (but i LOVE cilantro so there is never too much for me! as well as use my immerison blender to give a bit of a thicker texture. I like to make a double batch and freeze several portions for later!

Great soup! We make it all of the time.

A note to the poster about calorie content. Go to SparkPeople.com or Nutritiondata.com and you can enter in recipes and come up with the nutrition information that way. I add 4 cups of canned, drained black beans and for 6 servings (huge! I get 250 calories.
