Ok, I admit it. I hate it when people say the recipe was great, but they changed it. Well, it was great, and I changed it. I didn't have bacon, but I had smoked chicken sausages from Trader Joe's. Also, I thought I had 4 cans of black beans, but I had 2 cans of black beans and 2 cans of Trader Joe's Refried Beans with Jalapeno. No matter, I added them. The soup was amazing! It was perfect! The refried beans just made the soup thicker. My 14 year old son went back for 3rds and said he hoped there was enough for lunch the next day. My husband, sick with the flu, thought it was great! I'll certainly keep this recipe and make it often. I thought it would take longer, but it was done in 30 minutes. Perfect!

Made this soup last night and it was easy and delicious. Followed the recipe except I added a little cumin and added the crisp bacon in the end. I happened to have a smoked ham hock and let that simmer with it for awhile..You need to try this..you will not be disappointed. This was my first Dave recipe and was very impressed! My husband loved it..

I pulled this recipe together in a half hour after work. Great midweek meal. I added some fresh minced jalapeno to mine (I like spicy food and it gave it a great kick! The bacon really adds another dimension.
I crushed up tortilla chips and sprinkled on top for some crunch. This is a new regular recipe for me.

Made the soup for the first time today, and I must say, it is very good. I used applewood smoked bacon, but only 8 slices, and I skimmed off some of the fat before adding the onions. I used fire-roasted tomatoes, and two cans of chicken broth because the soup was too thick for my taste. I crisped the bacon, too, and saved some to crumble on top. Cilantro, lime juice, shredded sharp cheddar are all great garnishes. Wonderful.

I made a half recipe and it was delicious. For convenience I used minced garlic, a can of diced tomatoes w/ italian seasoning, and left out the ketchup and it turned out wonderfully. I left it on the stove on low until my husband came home from work (about an hour after I ate and it was thicker but just as good. Next time I'll crisp up the bacon more.

This soup is so tasty and easy to make. The only change I make is to fry the bacon pieces whole until they are crispy. Then I remove them before adding the next ingredients. I let the bacon cool, chop it up, and serve it as a garnish. Yum!

I made this once a few years ago after watching Dave make this on the show. I really like this recipe - it's easy and tastes so good. I like to let mine simmer a little longer than the recipe suggests. But, either way, it tastes great. I suggest adding green onions and sour cream and cheese - just makes the whole thing better!

My husband and I just finished eating this dish and we have to say it was the best soup we have ever had. We let it simmer for about 3 hours before adding the cilantro. We had green onions, sour cream and a little of our favorite hot sauce as garnish. The flavor is amazing and it will definitely be a soup I make again and again.
