I was a little hesitant to try this as I am not usually a fan of black beans. It was AMAZING! My husband was not happy when I told him what I had made for dinner, but after the first bite, he said" it's smack your mama good"! I only did one variation..I added tomatoes and chillis in a can for that extra pop of flavour. I also puree'd one can of beans before stirring in the pot, and I used my cast iron stew pot...delicious!

This soup has become one of my staples. I've made it for parties, family and friends and everyone loves it. I don't bother with the sour cream because the soup has enough flavor to stand on its own. This one is a winner.

Wonderful! We blended 2 cans of the beans in a blender before adding, just for a creamier texture. Also, in most recipes calling for diced tomatoes we use a can of "rotel" or salsa in the medium or hot version. We served it over tortilla chips - and will be making it again tonight!

Cooked it exactly by the recipe except I cooked dried black beans, after they got tender I added all the ingredients per the recipe! Excellent for a cold day!

This black bean recipe is absolutely delicious! The flavors work so well together. I made the following changes to tailor it to my palate: 1 I pureed half of the mixture in my food processor to thicken the soup, 2 I added cayenne pepper and fresh jalapeno pepper for some added kick, 3 I used 1 1/2 bunches of cilantro, and 4 I added the zest from one lime. Be sure and cook the bacon until it is crispy before adding the onion. Also, don't skip the lime juice or cilantro. It adds a terrific freshness to the soup. I served it with a dollop of sour cream topped with a couple of cilantro leaves and corn chips. Deeeelish!!!
