I've made beef stew for over 40 years and this is the best by far. The only addition I made was a tablespoon of Worchestershire sauce, 6 drops of Tobasco and a few drops of Angostura bitters. I also made it in the crockpot after browning and cooking the vegetables. This goes in my permanent collection.

This was very easy to put together and a great meal for a cold winter night. Browning the meat with butter really gives the stew a great rich flavor.

This has an overpowering wine taste; great if you like red wine. I might try it again substituting more stock in place of the wine. If you don't like wine you won't like this.

Everyone enjoyed it. I might add more carrots and potatos next time since there was enough liquid. Tasted better second day.

I've made many stews and they all seem to lack something. The green beans added a fresh flavor that filled in the gap. I used 4 tablespoons of flour to thicken and 1 1/4 cups good cabernet. Also added 2 tablespoons of sugar to cut the acidity. I did not peel the potatoes. Whole family liked the recipe and it was pretty to look at as well.

I made this for my dads bday dinner. I served it with Artisan bread and a side salad. Very hearty and rich.
We loved it!
