I made this cake and I was very disappointed. Actually I made two of them one for our house and one for a friend. I felt as though a homemade white cake would have been better. If I make something homemade, I like my bake goods made from scratch from start to finish. I feel that the box of cake mix is a big shortcut and a bad one. I am not very fond of boxed cake mixes. My husband and friend loved it. For me it was edible. I will not make this again. Sorry Neelys.

My boyfriend and I made this cake yesterday and it was AMAZING! You definitely need to double the amount of whipped topping to cover the whole cake, and I don't think you actually need the cognac (we substituted another liquor similar to cognac, but otherwise it was an easy recipe! Be sure to let the jello set long enough (but not too long!!! I am making this again this weekend, because we loved it that much!! :

We are all diabetics in this house. I made the 1-2-3-4 cake and used Splenda instead of sugar. I also used the sugar-free Cool Whip to sub for the whipping cream. So, we wound up with the only carbs being in the flour and the strawberries. I also used the lower carb orange juice instead of the cognac and our non-diabetic friends didn't know the difference and everybody cleaned their plates and asked for the recipe and couldn't believe I had made all the substitutions.

Who would have thunk it could be so easy a cake to make and oh so delicious!? I made this cake for my son's birthday, which was on Father's Day this year {first time in his 19 years fell on FD}. It turned out great, but Boy, was I worried! I had read most of the reviews prior to baking the cake. But, still forgot the warnings about the gelatin. The recipe almost ruined my cake with its unclear instructions on how jelled should the gelatin be. So, following the "liquid" jello step from recipe, I started pouring the gelatin over the cake. I could see that this would only cause the jello to soak into the cake and make it soggy. So, I stopped, and after reading more reviews, realized that the jello needed to set nearly an hour, and be quite thickened. This is in order to fill wholes in cake and have the gel layer on top. This prevents the strawberry layer on top of cake from making it soggy. I, too, used Cool Whip for topping. Then the cake turned out fine! My son and hubby loved it! The cake held up well in fridge, while it lasted....about two days. Thanks Gina for a great recipe! It would rate 5 stars if instructions were clearer.

I made this for a co-workers birthday (her request was for strawberry cake and there was nothing left to bring home. I didn't make the whipped topping from scratch, I just used Cool Whip topping. This is requested all the time now from others at work. Was a big hit.

The video for this Recipe calls for 2 cups heavy cream NOT 1 cup. That might be why some do not have enough topping. Also in the video, Gina puts the strawberries on top of the jello layer (that has been refrigeratedwithout the juice. That might be why some of you have soggy cake. I have made this cake several ways and we enjoy the yellow or white cake mix. It seems to compliment the strawberry flavor. Hope this helps.

I changed a couple of things. First of all I didn't use cognac, you don't really need it. Secondly I used regular yellow cake mix (it was pretty hard to find strawberry and it still tasted like strawberry shortcake. I also used cool whip topping (I love that stuff and it came out really good. The jello really gave it a nice moist texture and added just the right strawberry flavor. I highly recommend making this, especially if you're not much of a baker.

I made this cake for my husband and son. They both really liked it I did not put in any congac but it was still fine. You for sure cant mind a soggy texture with this cake. I also made this cake with a lemon cake mix and lemon jell-o and mixed lemon frosting and cool whip together for the frosting and that went over really well. It is a little something different and nice for a change of pace
