Half the stars to AB & the other half to the commentator who suggested cream style corn. I used an entire can mixed with the egg then eyeballed the water to the right consistency. Also added a bit of brown sugar. BTW My grandmother made something similar to AB's adding minced onion & pepper as a savory sidedish.

While this recipe is probably authentic, I was raised with light/sweet pancakes and these were very thick and did not have much flavor. The corn was nice, but added cherries as well to make it more palatable.

I made these for my family and they loved them! As I have a child with dietary needs, these were perfect as they were made of cornmeal and no dairy products. For a little sweetness i added some Organic Raw Blue Agave Nectar and cooked them on a grill with organic coconut oil. So great! Will absolutely make them again!

I grew up with Johnny cakes and this one takes me home. We use real warmed maple syrup and (when available wild Michigan blue berries instead of corn (smaller and tarter versions of what you find in the store. Thank you DNR.

Corn seemed an odd choice but I'll try pretty much anything once (think peacock tongues in Turkey. These were pretty good but I can't wait to try them when blue berries come back around.

Thanks for taking me back Alton.

This tastes much better when made with finely stone-ground blue corn meal. The texture changes completely!

I used creamed corn and less water, a bit of salt & pepper and some brown sugar, made this on the campfire and it rocked. So simple but really blew everyone away.

..I usually love your recipes, but this one didn't work for me. The cake was dry, crumbly and really bland.

I'd make the recipe following his directions, make a mini sample cake, and modify according to your tastes. It seemed bland to me (no big deal-- remember, the show this aired on was more about alternative cooking methods than the recipe itself!, so I just grabbed some honey and threw that in. That immediately improved the flavor, but next time I might try a little brown sugar too. If sweet's not your thing, I'm sure some herbs would be fantastic.
