my wife and I made this after watching it on Food Network. It was maybe the best steak I have ever had anywhere and we eat a lot of steak. And the tomatoe relish was terrific as well.

2 Tblsp of salt in rub, I found way too much. Perhaps they meant 2 tsp. I roasted the tomato relish and added the herbs before serving. Very nice.

We've made this twice - it rocks. We make the tomato relish for salads very frequently. They are so yummy!! You have to try this recipe - Jan Birnbaum is a genius!

This is the best steak rub! I love Michael Chiarello's cooking style, but his buddy, Jan, beat him out on this competition. I'm NOT a coffee drinker, but my husband is, and I must say that the freshly ground coffee add's great flavor without screaming "coffee". The meat's flavor really stood out (we used a French Roast. The Tomato Relish is excellent, but we tried it before tomatoes were really in season. The second time we used "Jan's Rub" on the rib eyes (boneless tho, we accompanied it with Michael Chiarello's "Best Button Mushroom's" which are FANTASTIC on any steak! (Double the recipe if entertaining, mushroom lover's pluck them right out of the pan!
