I walked into a party with these gorgeous appetizers on a pristine white platter, and before I could take my coat off and put them down, they were half gone. By the time I got a cocktail, there weren't any left for the cook! Simple to make;(more fun with a friend! next time I'll use hot Italian sausage, so maybe there'll be one left for me!

My original intention was to make this recipe as it suggested. However, I ran short on time so I made some alterations. I grilled the sausage whole (sweet & hot to get that nice brown coloring and then I cut it after, to prevent the skin from curling up. Then I spread some smokey garlic onion mustard (bought from Home Goods made by Food & Wine Magazine onto the sausage, cut a small thin piece of sharp provolone, added a piece of jarred marinated artichoke, a piece of jarred roasted pepper and stuck a toothpick through it. I didn't use the sundried tomatoes because one of my guests was allergic to tomatoes. They were a hit! Everyone raved and loved them! To keep them warm for replenishing your party platter . . .after I cut the sausage I placed them in a non-stick frying pan (alone, no oil and when I needed to put out more I would just heat them up quick until they started to sizzle. If they start to look like they are drying out, you can add a bit of beef broth to the pan.

I made these appetizers for a party and was surprised at how they got ice cold so quickly. They would have been much tastier if they were warm but with the basil topping I was afraid to put them in the microwave to heat up. They look pretty and had nice flavors but I wouldn't serve them again.

This is a great appetizer. This is the variance. I decided to use spicy Italian Sausage and since that has a "pepper" component to it, I removed the roasted red peppers from the recipe. However, I subsituted fresh mozzarella cheese--I cubed it. Therefore, the placement was...

    From base up:

    1. Sausage
    2. Mozzarella
    3. Artichoke
    4. Sun Dried Tomato
    5. Basil Leaf

Next Time I am also considering replacing the sun dried tomato with roma .

    Enjoy!

I made these for a party and they were a huge hit! I used sweet italian sausage but I think next time I will do a mix of sweet and spicy. Also, I cut the sausage before I browned it in the pan and they did not stand up so next time I will cook the sausage first and then cut it so I get a nice flat bottom. Overall, tons of flavor and a beautiful presentation.
