The original recipe is excellent, but we also tried it with different pastry dough. The filling is so good, our favorite was to just make the filling, and serve with a bit of fat-free whipped topping or light vanilla ice cream. The filling itself is so quick and easy, it was a breeze to make for unexpected guests during the holidays. But we'll make this dish all year round!

As previous reviewers stated, these turnovers were very good. However, the size of the turnovers is very small. You cut a typical phyllo sheet into "4 long pieces"?! Each strip is then maybe 2 inches wide. So you get about a 2 x 2 turnover. After making 8 of these, I still had 3/4's of the filling leftover(even if you cut them the short way, you still won't use all the filling and it will be hard to roll them up. I then proceeded to make 20 of these mini turnovers! Even though I was surprised at the size, it turned out to make a more attractive plate to serve my guests with 2 stacked mini turnovers and a small scoop of light ice cream. Yes, you could make them bigger by cutting larger strips, but I had already started the process with the first 4 and then just kept going for uniformity. I also sprinkled a little sugar on top before cooking. It gave it a little something extra visually and taste-wise.

These apple turnovers are delicious. I made them with Fuji apples because that is what I had. They were delicious; I also used cherries the first time, and used raisins when I made them the second times. They will curb your sweet tooth and keep your calories low if you're watching your diet. MUST TRY!!
