Taste was good, but not super. Her banana cream pie is more of a standout. I also had a hard time getting the slices out of the pan. It may be because I followed her method (against my better judgment for the gelatin. A lot clumped up. Usually recipes call for sprinkling it over cold water, then adding it to the hot. I would recommend that. Look for graham crackers without trans fat (not all of them are. I added a couple of teaspoons of Frangelico for more flavor, Amaretto or Kahlua would be good too.

This pie was delicous and creamy. I really enjoyed baking the pie, it is the first time I have ever made a pudding from scratch. I understand that this recipe does have a minimal amount of butter and heavy cream, but when you are having a dessert then it is necessary to add these things. I made this pie for a party and everyone loved it.

This was the first time I ever made pudding from scratch, and it was delish. I didn't have bittersweet chocolate on hand, so I substituted dark instead. I thought it tasted fine. The crust was kind of bland, though, and I think I might add a tablespoon of sugar to it next time just so it has a little flavor. Otherwise, this was definitely a winner. The friends I made it for enjoyed it too.

This pie is definitely worth making. This is not an artery blocker. Everything in moderation is the key; this pie gives you a very chocolatey taste with less fat than most desserts. Unless you are an R.D. with a masters in nutrition and a professor of nutrition like Ellie, you should not throw darts! Ellie, you're the greatest, love your recipes!!

My boyfriend and I loved this pie...and even better than the pie...I had too much pudding for the crust and had enough for 2 servings and ate it warm. The warm homemade pudding reminded me of childhood days. The pie sat up great and was delicious. I will definitely hang on to this receipe. It's as good as others that are much more fattening and unhealthy. Thanks

I'm not sure what the reviewer who says this is an artery clogger was thinking. Perhaps the reviewer didn't actually read the quantities carefully: 2 tablespoons of butter is excessive? Not in the least. And the heavy cream is an optional garnish, which I omitted.
I made this over the weekend with three small children, one of whom is an early blooming chocoholic, and not only is the recipe easy enough that children can help, it's also DELICIOUS enough that they don't notice it's "health food." This is one of the best puddings I've ever had/made, all calorie and fat discussion aside. Who would make Jello pudding again if they tried this recipe once?

I wish that everyone who keeps criticizing Ellie's dessert recipes would stop! Of course, eating too much butter and heavy cream is unhealthy. However, Ellie's message and the message of every qualified nutritionist/dietitian today is that no food should be completely eliminated from an individual's diet. Rather, moderation is key! When you compare Ellie's dessert recipes to their traditional counterparts, there is always a noticeable difference in fat and Calories! Obviously, it goes without saying that you can't eat the whole pie in one sitting as part of a healthy diet, but a slice now and then is perfectly acceptable. And I thought that Ellie's pie was a tasty indulgence!

This was a huge hit in my & my husband's book (as well as a coworker who I shared it with today! It was fairly easy to make, too. One of my husband's favorite pies is Marie Callendar's Chocolate Cream Pie and he said this was just as good, if not better.
As to the reviewer who talked about how bad this dessert is for you, dessert is by its nature unhealthy. However, this recipe is a much healthier version of pudding pie (1% milk, only a "dollop" of whipped cream & 2 tblsp of butter for the whole crust!, but with all the wonderful flavor!

Let's see, heavy cream, butter, lots of saturated fat--- sounds more like an artery clogger than something healthy. This is a total sham, don't bother if you actually are interested in healthy eating.
