These bars are still warm on the counter, and I've had two small ones already. I think I need to wrap them up really quickly, before I eat any more tonight! This is a very versatile recipe, and so many reviewers offered helpful suggestions & substitutions. I wanted to make them lower glycemic, so I used 1/4 cup agave nectar in place of the 1/3 cup maple syrup (bake at a lower temp: 325 for 25 minutes, so that it doesn't burn and almond meal instead of flour. I also reduced the dried fruit by half, but added back some moisture with unsweetened apple butter, about 1/3 cup. I am also careful about buying dried fruit - too often it has added sugar - so I usually buy it at a health food store or Trader Joe's. For those who found the bars a little bland, try adding some crystallized ginger! Yeah, I know it has sugar... But a little goes a long way, so that's how I rationalize that. And for the reviewer who had trouble spreading the dough in the pan, just put a plastic sandwich bag over your hand and give it a quick spray with cooking spray. Then you can spread it quickly and easily with your hand. All in all, this recipe is really a keeper, and I think you could make it a different way every time and it would still be great.

I liked the idea of making your own energy bars and knowing exactly what's in them. I'm not one for super sweet bars in general but these came out a little blander than I expected. I will try again using different fruit and maybe tweaking it a little for my taste. Will definitely continue making these!

I may experiment with different dried fruits and nuts but I thought these were a great, tasty, healthy snack. The dough is sticky but I used a piece of wax paper to press it into the corners of the pan and that seemed to work just fine.

I was looking for a healthy quick breakfast on the go for my kids and although they only thought these were OK, they are still eating them! I make them with a smoothie and I couldn't ask for a better breakfast for the kids to start their day. My only criticism of this recipe is spreading them in the pan! What a nightmare, I couldn't get them to spread in a 9x14 pan for nothing! They were so sticky, I sprayed PAM on a spatula, etc. Anyways, any tips on spreading them thin?

I'm a personal trainer. Last night my client brought me in one of these energy bars from someone in her office. I was amazed at how wonderful it was. I told her I had to have the receipe and couldn't wait and went on a mission to find it. I can't wait to make it.

These energy bars are pretty good. I was a little skeptical when I made them because I have had a lot of bad ones. My favorite store bought are "CLIF", but these were really good and half the calories. I am definitely making the switch.

Despite the fact that it called for an array of NOT CHEAP ingredients, most of which I won't use for anything else, my family really liked these. I thought they tasted horrible and gagged on first swallow, but my kids ate it, so that's something.

Wow these are SO YUMMY! I'm the only one in my family that liked them, though... but I don't have a sweet tooth so these are great for me! They aren't sweet, just nice and nutty. mmmm...

Oh, next time I think I'm going to put in a pinch of coconut extract and see if that gives them even more flavor!
